Frederick, July 16—(Special to the Headlight Journal)—William F. Jones, 40 year old constable was stabbed and killed in an effort to stop a knife fight at a picnic at Manitou, eight miles north of here, early Sunday morning.
Claude Meadow, 30 year old farmer, was held Sunday as charges of murder were being drawn against him by F. H. Hurst, county Attorney.
Meadows was fighting with Virgil Jones, another farmer, not related to the constable. Both Virgil Jones and Meadows were badly slashed. Virgil Jones was released from the hospital Sunday morning, but Meadows was still under the care of physicians at the county jail Sunday night. Witnesses said that Bill Jones stepped in to separate the fighters. As he stepped up to them Meadows swung at Virgil Jones the knife cutting Bill Jones’ jugular vein. Meadows turned to Bill Jones and apologized for hitting him. He stopped fighting and started to accompany Bill Jones to the jail. Jones took about here steps and fell over dead.
Another story from Manitou says that Bill Jones was stabbed in the heart.
