| The awful details of a crime committed a year ago were brought vividly to our remembrance yesterday when Ed. L. Martin and Julias Laird were brought here as prisoners from their quiet home at Mannsvile. These men were in charge of Deputy Stewart and had been arrested on an indictment from the United States court for the northern district, at Muskogee, charging them with the dual crime of kidnapping and arson. Mr. Martin, the father and Mr. Laird is the husband of Mrs. Laird, who was wantonly and cruelly murdered a yea ago by Indians at her home near Earlsboro, in the Seminole nation, an act so cruel that it was the talk of the United States at the time. Added to this horror was the burning at the stake of two young Indians charged by an armed and enraged mob with the murder of the lady. Charged with complicity in this latter act are the two respected citizens, Ed Martin and his son-in law. On reaching here a writ of removal to the northern district was issued by judge Townsend. In the meantime other agencies were at work and bond for both men was secured. The readiness with which these bonds were made shows the standing of the two men. The bond for kidnapping was $5,000 and for arson $3,000, and the same were secured by such men as Frank Fensley, M. J. Sass, R. F. Scivally and others, who promptly came to the prisoners; aid and obtainer their release. |
