The Tecumseh Republican
May 16, 1898

Monday evening about 6 o’clock two or three shots were heard from the John Fiddler saloon, on the corner south of the Bank of Tecumseh. In a few moments the sidewalk was crowded with people and it was found that Thurston Renfro’s lifeless body was lying on the floor; Isaac Renfro had received a flesh wound in the right breast and that "Dutch" Fiddler’s face and head were cut or beaten in a frightful manner.

It is impossible to get a true account of that awful deed at this writing, as those who witnessed the fight refuse to make a statement. From what we have been able to learn it seems that some differences had existed between the Renfro boys and the Fiddler boys for some time past, over a ring which had been pawned at the Renfro saloon. The Renfro boys had gone down to the Fiddler saloon where they became involved in a fight, which terminated as stated above. The Republican will await the evidence in court.

The Renfro boys have been citizens of Tecumseh since the opening to settlement of Pottawatomie County, and Isaac Renfro is the owner of some of the best and most valuable property in Tecumseh.

The Fiddler boys commenced business in this city last fall, having formerly been engaged in faring on their father’s place, a few miles southeast of the city.

The relatives of the deceased were notified by telegraph and the body was embalmed and held to await their arrival but at the time of going to press they had not arrived on account of washouts on the railroad.

The deceased leaves a wife and two small children and several bother and sister together with a large circle of friends to mourn his untimely death. The Republican joins in sending sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives.

The Fiddler boys are in jail awaiting a preliminary hearing, which will probably no occur until Monday.
