Quite Okmulgee, Okla., Jan 20-Extermination of one of the most daring bands of outlaws was completed near here today with the killing by a posse of Oscar Poe, Will Hart and Harry Hart. Since the first of the year posse men have killed four outlaws, while the bandits killed three members of various posses. One outlaw and three posse men have been wounded. More than $5,00 of the loot obtained by the bandits in raids on Oklahoma banks has been revered since the drive to exterminate them began.
Oscar Poe, the Hart brothers and Russell tucker made up the four bandits killed by posse men, while M. L. Boulware, a deputy sheriff of Castle; Charles Bullock, city marshal of Delaware, and John Garretson, a merchant of Delaware, were killed by the outlaws.
Those wounded are Joseph Layton, deputy sheriff of Oklahoma county, shot in leg in a battle near Harrah, Wednesday; Melville Roman, chief of police of Okmulgee, wounded in the hand in today’s skirmish near here; Edward Garretson, brother of John, wounded several times in a clash near Nowata, several weeks ago, and Joe Littrell, bandit, shot through chest and arm in a battle with a posse near Bolay yesterday.
Pone, Poe, an uncle of Oscar Poe, Is in jail in Nowata County charged with being a member of the gang that for months had terrorized banking institutions in Oklahoma. Between January 6 and ending yesterday afternoon, at least six battles were fought between the outlaws and posse men.
Harry and Will Hart were twins.
The battle between the posse and the robbers today occurred near the Deep Fork River bottoms, where the men were camping. When local officers were informed of the presence of the men at the camp a posse of citizens and officers was organized and they left in automobiles. Upon arriving at the camp the posse men found a crude brush shelter, but the men were not found. The posse men then formed a semi-circle around the camp and waited the return of the men.
About 10 o’clock they were seen approaching from a farmhouse nearby. When near the camp the posse men ordered them to surrender, when the fight ensured with forgoing results.
