I was a Chief Warrant Officer ((W-3) in the Navy. I served as a Maintenance Officer in Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Seven (HC-7) operating detachments of Combat Search and Rescue helicopters from aircraft cairriers off the coast of Vietnam.
HC-7 has been noted as “The Most Highly Decorated Navy Squadron in Vietnam.” HC-7 had the only Navy pilot to receive the Medal of Honor, four receiving the Navy Cross, many pilots and crewmen receiving Silver Stars, numerous Bronze Stars, countless Air Medals and Navy Commendations, more than 50 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and a few Purple Hearts. The squadron itself was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for “Extraordinary Heroism.”
