CHARLES C. BULL

Charles C. Bull, a retired railroad engineer died at a local hospital on December 8, 1969. Funeral services will be at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. William S. Woodman of St. Peter's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Bull was born at Valparaiso, Indiana on July 8, 1882. He came to Huntington in 1904 and went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad as an engine wiper. He started his work in La Grande as a railroad fireman in September 1905. He retired on June 30, 1947.

At the time of his death he was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, U.P. Old Timbers [Timers] Club No. 17, B.P.O.E. No. 433, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

On April 24, 1907 he married Muriel Goodnough of La Grande. They made their home in La Grande since that time.

Mr. Bull is survived by his wife, Muriel, a son, Paul C. both of La Grande, two grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

La Grande
1911-1999

Marie (Young) Bull, 87, died Monday, November 15, 1999 at a La Grande nursing home.

A viewing will be until 8 p.m. today at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1509 Fourth St., La Grande. A funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel with Rev. Susan V. Smith-Allen officiating. At Mrs. Bull's request, there will be no graveside service. The interment service will be for family only. A reception will follow the funeral at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Bull was born November 18, 1911, in Wright County, Missouri, to Herman E. and Artie V. (Garner) Young. The family moved to Oregon in April 1918 and lived on a farm in Morrow County.

Mrs. Bull graduated from Pine City High School in 1929 and entered Eastern Oregon Normal School that fall. She graduated in 1931 with the first class to complete the full two years at the new school.

After teaching school for a year she married Paul C. Bull of La Grande October 2, 1932, at the home of her brother in The Dalles. The couple lived in Portland for four months before returning to La Grande.

She became a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in 1934 and has been active in various groups, especially the Altar Guild.

After her husband began working for the railroad, Mrs. Bull joined the Ladies Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman and Enginemen and was active in the society until it disbanded and became E. L. F. S. social club.

At 47, Mrs. Bull learned to bowl and bowled in two women's leagues and a mixed league. She was league secretary from 1959 to 1978 and continued to bowl until 1986 when hip surgery and arthritis forced her to be less active. She was a member of the Women's International Bowling Congress for 25 years.

Mrs. Bull also enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, and working crossword puzzles.

The Bulls were charter members of the Mount Emily Good Sams, a recreational vehicle club. They enjoyed many outings with the group and took trips to many states and national parks.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande; daughter, Beverley Garrison of Redmond; son, Robert Bull of La Grande; six grandchildren; eight great-grand children; and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a half-brother and a half-sister, Robert H. Young and Juanita Sweet, both of Junction City, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Peter's Endowment Fund in care of Loveland.

MURIEL LOVISA BULL

Muriel L. Bull, 85, formerly of 1403 6th St., La Grande, died Friday at a local hospital.

Mrs. Bull was born on Sept. 21, 1885 at Island City, the daughter of Charles D. and Mary Bay Goodnough. She moved to La Grande when she was four years old and lived her entire life here, except while attending Holmes Business College in Portland. Mrs. Bull worked in the office of the La Grande Investment Company which was owned by W. D. Sargeant and J. K. Wright. After a few years she went to work in the county clerks office as stenographer and was working there when she was married to Charles C. Bull on April 23, [24] 1907. The were married in the first Episcopal Church built in La Grande which had been moved from the south part of town to the location of the present church and 4th and O ave.

Mrs. Bull was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, belonged to the Grand International Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and the Union Pacific Old Timers Club.

Survivors include her son Paul C. Bull and his wife, Marie of La Grande; grandson Robert C. Bull, La Grande; granddaughter Mrs. W. R. Garrison, Union; sister Mrs. Bessie Walnum, Island City; sister-in-law Mrs. Effie Goodnough, La Grande; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles on Dec. 8, 1969.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Monday at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Kopp officiation. Concluding services will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

  PAUL CLINTON BULL
 1911-2000



Paul Clinton Bull, 89,  passed away November 26, 2000 at a local care facility in La Grande.  Paul was born on February 7, 1911 to Charles C. and Muriel L. (Goodnough) Bull in La Grande.  He was their only child.

 Viewing will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12 noon Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1509 Fourth St., La Grande.  Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2000 at the funeral chapel with Rev. Susan V. Smith-Allen officiating.  A reception will follow at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.  At Mr. Bull's request, the graveside service will be for family only.

 He attended school in La Grande and graduated from La Grande High School in 1929.  He attended Eastern Oregon Normal School during the winter terms and worked for the Oregon State Highway Dept. during the spring, summer and fall.

 On October 2, 1932 he married Marie Young at the home of her brother in The Dalles, Oregon.  The couple lived in Portland for four months then returned to La Grande where he operated a service station.  Later he worked for Perkins Motor Company in La Grande and Enterprise.  He was never idle, always willing to work and he worked at a variety of jobs.  While attending High School he worked at the Blue Mountain Creamery in La Grande.

 Mr. Bull started working for the Union Pacific Railroad in April 1941 as a fireman. He was promoted to engineer on June 8, 1944 and retired April 30, 1973.  He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen and the United Transportation Union (U.T.U.).
 He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and using a metal detector.  He was a life time member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church serving as a Vestry member for many years.  He was a charter member of the Mount Emily Good Sams, a recreation vehicle club and enjoyed many outings with that group.  He held the offices of Vice President, President and was Wagon Master for a number of years.  Both he and his wife enjoyed traveling in their motor home and visited many states, National Parks and other places of interest.

 After his retirement Mr. Bull enjoyed bowling, reading, and working crossword puzzles.  He was an active member in the Elks Lodge #433 and was voted Elk of the Year 1991-1992.

 Preceded in death by his wife, Marie,  he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Beverley and Ray Garrison of Redmond, Oregon, and son and daughter-in-law Robert and Pearl Bull of La Grande.  There are four granddaughters, two grandsons, eight great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

 In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Peter's Endowment Fund or to the Grande Ronde Hospital Hospice in care of Loveland.
