A. B. Conley, Pioneer of County, Called Beyond

Another pioneer of the Grande Ronde valley answered the last call Sunday when death claimed Archie Bird Conley, of La Grande and former resident of Cove. Mr. Conley, one of the outstanding pioneers of this county, spent a long and useful life, having an important hand in the development of the county to its present stage.

The deceased was 88 years, one month and eleven days of age and on January 4th, he and his wife celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. A few days before their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. George Miller had celebrated a half-century of wedded life.

Mr. Conley was born in Memphis, Tenn., January 11, 1837 and was married to Joisa Hopper January 4, 1858 in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Four children were born to this union, one girl and three boys, three of whom are living: Mrs. George Miller, Jabe Conley and Frank Conley, all of Cove, Edmond E. Conley passed on many years ago.

Mr. Conley is survived by his three children, his aged widow, 23 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Was County Sheriff

Mr. And Mrs. Conley left Illinois for Oregon in the spring of 1874 and arrived here in September. He served in the capacity of county sheriff nearly half a century ago.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1:30 o'clock at the Baptist church. The body will be at the family home, 1602 Adams avenue, from today noon until 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, where friends may view it. Burial, in charge of the W. H. Bohnenkamp company, will be in the Island City cemetery.

Services Monday For Grant Conley

Services for Archie Grant Conley, 63, farmer of 1501 Cedar St., who died Friday at Grande Ronde hospital, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Dempsey's Funeral Chapel. Auspices will be by Cove Lodge No. 91 A.F. & A.M., and burial will be in the Island City cemetery. Dr. Louis Samson will officiate.

Mr. Conley was born at Cove, and lived his entire life in Cove and La Grande. He was a graduate of Whitman College, and member of Beta Theta Phi Fraternity, Cove Lodge No. 91 A.F. & A.M., Grande Ronde Valley No. 20. Royal Arch Masons, Union Council No. 5 R & SM, Baker Consistory Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, Al Kader Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine; Cherry Chapter No. 177, Order of Eastern Star, BPOE No. 433, and Oregon and Union County Cattlemen's Association.

Survivors include his widow, Estelle; four stepchildren, Tom, Bill and Bart Garrison, all of Roseburg, Mrs. Bob Boyle of Denver, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Merrell Conley and Virgil Conley, both of Cove, two sisters, Mrs. Vina Ross of La Grande, Mrs. Maxine Stuart of Cove; one nephew, Frank Conley of Cove; one niece, Mary Jane Johnson of Eugene; and an aunt, Mrs. Eugene Millering of La Grande.

BURL LEE CONLEY

Burl L. Conley, 81, lifetime resident of the Grande Ronde Valley, died Friday.

Conley was born on October 22, 1890 in Union County, the son of Rose Ann and Edwin Conley. He attended school at Red Pepper School and one year at Weston Normal School. He farmed in the Cove area for many years.

He was a member of the La Grande Elks Lodge No. 433 and the Cove Sportsmans Club.

Survivors include his daughters, Nadine Stoop of Portland, and Nadene Simpson, Quincy, Wash.; four grandchildren; one great grandson; sister Mrs. Grover (Stella) Grimmett, La Grande, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife Thalia on June 22, 1968, and two brothers, Tuck Conley in 1965 and Jay Conley in 1967.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Kopp and the La Grande Elks Lodge officiating. Vault interment will follow at the Island City Cemetery.

Estelle Conley

Estelle Conley, formerly of Union, Cove and La Grande, died Saturday, March 9, 1966, at the Heritage Residential Center in Tualatin. She was 91.

A service for Mrs. Conley will begin at 2 p.m., Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. Committal and interment will follow at the Island City Cemetery.

Friends may call at Daniels Chapel until 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday.

One of 11 children, Mrs. Conley was born March 31, 1904, in Otto, Wyo., to Erastus and Anna Marie (Stevens) Geertsen. The family moved to Union in 1913. She graduated from Union High School with the class of 1922.

On Aug. 22, 1922, she married Leonard Earl Garrison of North Powder. The couple had four children.

Estelle's second marriage was to Archie Grant Conley of Cove. They were married on Feb. 25, 1951, in Boise. They made their home in Cove and La Grande. Mr. Conley died on Dec. 17, 1965, in La Grande.

Mrs. Conley spent 19 years as organist for Eastern Star Chapters in Union, Cove and La Grande. She was appointed grand organist in 1964. She was also a member of the Portland Daughters of the Nile and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas Garrison of Bend and Barton Garrison of Redmond; daughter, Barbara Garrison of Wilsonville; sister, Fawn Weimer of Payette, Idaho; grandchildren, Pat Goss and Karen Hamilton of La Grande, Steven Goss of Canby, Randy Garrison of Roseburg, Teresa Richardson of Richland, Wash., Gwen Garrison of Sierra Madre, Calif., Annette Garrison of Santa Barbara, Calif., Rhonda Hedquist of Dillard, Grant Garrison of San Diego, Chris Garrison of Portland, Mark Garrison of Portland, Mike Garrison of Bend and Margo Baker of Pullman, Wash.; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and other relatives and friends.

Her son William Garrison died in September 1987.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, 97201.

ISABEL FRANCES CONLEY

Isabel Frances Conley, 62, died June 10 at Grande Ronde Hospital following a brief illness. A Cove resident, she had been a teacher there and in Wallowa County.

She was born Nov. 14, 1910 at Aumsville, the daughter of Edward and Katherine Heger. The family later settled in Joseph.

Mrs. Conley graduated from Eastern Oregon College in 1930, and taught school in Wallowa County for about 10 years.

She married Merrell F. Conley of Cove in 1940, and lived on the Conley ranch ever since. Mrs. Conley was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church; Daughters of the Nile, Nida Temple; the Cove Library Guild and was Cove Chairman for the Oregon Heart Association.

Survivors include her husband, Merrell; a son, Frank, La Grande; daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Johnson, teacher at Cove; a brother, Paul Heger of Ellensburg, Wash.; a sister, Sr. Anne Heger of Seattle and uncles Nicholas Rollinger, Sunnyside, Wash. And August Rollinger, Laguna Hills, Calif.

A Christian Wake service will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Msgr. George A. Murphy officiating. Requiem Mass will be conducted at the church Wednesday, 10 a.m., Fr. Robert Miller officiating. Interment will follow at the Cove Cemetery.

Those who wish may contribute to the Oregon Heart Association or the Shriner Crippled Childrens Hospital in memory of Isabel Conley. Contributions may be made through Dempsey's Funeral Chapel.

Friends may pay their respects at Dempsey's Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday until 9:30 a.m.

Jabez J. Conley, County Pioneer, Called Beyond

Jabez J. Conley, Union County pioneer, died at his residence in La Grande at 2 o'clock this morning. His health had been failing for several months.

Funeral services will be held at the Snodgrass & Zimmerman mortuary at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be at the Island City cemetery in the family burial plot. The Rev. Oliver Riley, rector of the St. Peter's Episcopal church, will preach the funeral sermon.

Mr. Conley was born on the Fourth of July, 1861 in Jefferson county, Illinois. He crossed the plains with his father's family in 1874. He was the oldest son of A. B. Conley and Joisa Conley, deceased, and had made his home in Union county for the last 54 years. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides a great number of friends, his wife, Alma Conley, a daughter of the late Benjamin Brown, who built the first house in La Grande in 1861.

Mr. Conley also leaves five children: Archie B., Luther Nip, Mrs. Myrtle Heryford, Mrs. Irene Carter and Mrs. Effie Goodnough, all of whom live in this county. Another son, Joseph E., died in infancy.

JAY CONLEY

Services for Jay Conley, 70, will be conducted at the Daniels Funeral Chapel Thursday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. Rev. Clarence Kopp will officiate. Burial will be at the Island City Cemetery with veterans of World War I taking charge.

Conley, a retired farmer living at the Elk's Club, died Oct. 15. He was born at Alicel Nov. 28, 1896 and had spent this entire lifetime in the Grande Ronde Valley. He was a resident of the Elks club the past 20 years.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge, La Grande; Mt. Emily Post, Veteran's of Foreign Wars; Veteran's of World War I; and the Episcopal Church.

Conley is survived by one daughter, Jackie Zenger, Portland; one sister, Mrs. Grover Grimmett, La Grande; one brother, Burl Conley, Cove; and other relatives.

Mrs. A. B. Conley Dies Suddenly; Funeral Monday

Grim Angel Takes Pioneer of Grande Ronde Valley - Demise Due to Heart Attack

Mrs. A. B. Conley, Union county pioneer, died this morning at 10 o'clock at her home here following a heart attack suffered yesterday afternoon. She was 86 years old.

Mrs. Conley was born in Jefferson county, Ill., and was raised there, marrying A. B. Conley in the year 1858. In the fall of 1874 Mr. and Mrs. Conley and their three children came to Union county, crossing the plains with a team and wagon.

The settled on land in the Cove section and for many years Mr.Conley was one of the most extensive farmers in Eastern Oregon, the Conley ranch being known all over this part of the state.

Lived at Cove

After leaving the farm they moved to Cove and made their home there for several years, and about 15 years ago they moved to La Grande and have since made their home here at 1602 Adams avenue.

Mr. Conley died two years ago at the age of 88 years. Two years before his death Mr. and Mrs. Conley celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary here.

Mrs. Conley spent last winter in California, returning to La Grande this spring in excellent health. She met with members of the family and friends at Riverside park less than a month ago, when the Smith-Conley reunion was held there. Her sudden death came as a shock to her many friends and relatives.

She leaves three children, one daughter, Mrs. George Miller, and two sons, Jabe Conley and Frank Conley, all of Cove, also one sister, Mrs. Delphia Sinks, of Ill., and a half-sister, Mrs. Malinda Bradshaw, who lives in Idaho. In addition to these she leaves to mourn her loss 23 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren, besides a multitude of friends.

Funeral Monday

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at two o'clock from the First Baptist church. The Rev. G. A. Pollard, former pastor of the church will return to La Grande from Beaverton, Ore., to conduct the service. Interment will be made in the Island City cemetery. The remains are at the Bohnenkamp mortuary.

Joseph Franklin Conley
Long-Time Valley Resident Dies

Funeral services for J. Frank Conley, 74, who passed away this morning after several weeks illness will be held at the Snodgrass Funeral home Sunday at 1:30 P.m. with burial in the Island City cemetery.

He was born in Mount Vernon, Ill., Nov. 19, 1865. He came to Union county in 1874 and had made his home in the valley since that time. Survivors are: his widow Sarah A.; three sons, Grant, Merrell and Virgil, all of Cove; two daughters, Mrs. Vina Conley Ross of La Grande and Maxine of Cove; a sister, Mrs. Matilda Miller, Cove.

Merrell F. Conley

Merrell Frank Conley, Route 1 Box 236, Cove, died Friday at Grande Ronde Hospital. He was 78.

Mr. Conley was born on Oct. 25, 1906, to Joe Frank and Sarah (Gray) Conley at Cove. On May 16, 1940 he married Isabel Heger. She died on June 10, 1973. On Aug. 9, 1975, he married Ruth Holt Lacer at La Grande.

He was a member of the Cove Methodist Church, Cove Lodge No. 91 A.F. & A.M., Baker Consistory Scottish Rite, Al Kader Temple and the Cove Sportsman Club. He was a member and past president of the Knife and Fork Club and a member and past president of the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show. He served many years on the Cove and Union County school boards and was a veryactive member of the wheat league.

Survivors include his wife Ruth in Cove; sons Frank Conley of Joseph, and Ralph Lacer of Pleasant, Calif.; daughters Mrs. DeWayne (Mary Jane) Johnson of Cove, and Patricia Sweet of Boise; sister Maxine Stuart of Cove; aunt, Mrs. Eugene (Berdillie) Millering; four grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Grant and Virgil, and a sister Vina Ross.

The funeral service will be held at Cove Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. E. L. Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at the Cove Cemetery.

Those who wish may make contributions in Mr. Conley's memory to the Shriner's Hospital in care of Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel, 1502 Seventh St.

Sarah Agnes (Gray) Conley of Cove Dies

COVE - Mrs. Sarah A. Conley, 82, prominent Union County woman and descendant of Grande Ronde valley pioneers, died Thursday at a La Grande Hospital.

Mrs. Conley had been in failing health for some time. Funeral services are incomplete but will be announced later by Daniels Funeral Home.

Born in Lower Cove, March 27, 1879, Mrs. Conley and her husband, the late Frank Conley, are operators of one of the largest cattle and wheat ranches in this region.

Her home, about three miles northwest of Cove on the main Cove highway was a landmark and surveyed the many hundreds of acres of Conley ranch land.

Mrs. Conley had been extremely active throughout her life in various civic and women's clubs and was a Grange member.

She is survived by three sons, Merrell, Grant and Virgil Conley, all prominent Cove area ranchers; two daughters, Mrs. Vina Ross, La Grande, and Maxine Winters, Cove; a brother, Joe Gray, La Grande; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Childers, Cove and Mrs. Eugene Millering, La Grande; and two grandchildren, Frank and Mary Jane Conley, both of Cove.

Mrs. Thalia (Lyman) Conley

Mrs. Burl Conley, 71, Cove, died at a local rest home Saturday, June 22.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. at the Daniels Valley Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Kopp officiating. Burial will follow in the Island City Cemetery.

Mrs. Conley, daughter of Solon E. [and] Luella Ward Lyman, was born in Provo, Utah, January 4, 1897, and lived all except two years of her life in Union County. She was married to Burl Conley at Walla Walla, Washington, in 1937, and was a member of the Sportsmens Club in Cove.

Survivors include the widower, Burl Conley, Cove; one son, Ben Garity, White City, Oregon; one daughter Nadine Simpson, Portland; two sisters, Gladys Fenton, Portland and Hilda Lowry, Coulee City, Washington; three brothers, Grant, Paul, [and] Clay Lyman, all of Spokane, Washington; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Those who desire may contribute to the Oregon Heart Fund in memory of Mrs. Conley.

Nettie Conley

Nettie Conley of La Grande died Wednesday at the La Grande Nursing Center just 25 days short of her 100th birthday.

Born Sept. 8, 1885, near La Grande, Mrs. Conley was the daughter of Charles and Martha (Childers) Golden. The Childers were a pioneer family who came to the valley in 1863 in a covered wagon. On July 18, 1902, she married Archie Conley at Union.

They farmed at Phrys Point in Cove for several years. The Conley's owned and operated one of the first combines brought into the Cove area.

Her husband died on March 4, 1974.

Mrs. Conley was the oldest member of the First Christian Church. She was baptized in 1902. Mrs. Conley was an active Sunday school teacher, member of the ladies aid and served as a deaconess for the church.

Survivors include daughters Lois DeLong of La Grande and Mrs. Raymond (Cleo) DeLong of Vancouver, Wash.; sister Mrs. Faye Yeske of La Grande; eight grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Carl; a son, Royal; brothers John and Arthur Golden; and sisters Rachel Caviness and Zoe Hull.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel with Jack Hart of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Island City Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Conley's memory to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund in care of Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel, 1502 Seventh Street. Friends may call this evening.

'Tuck' Conley, 75, Dies In La Grande

William "Tuck" Conley, 75, county maintenance employe of 2707 N. Fourth St., died Wednesday at Grande Ronde hospital.

Services will be at Daniels Funeral Home, Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Danny Pyles will officiate and burial will be in Island City Cemetery.

Mr. Conley was born in the Sand Ridge area of Union County and was a lifetime resident of the area.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Claudia Conley of La Grande; two brothers, Burl Conley of Cove and Jay Conley of La Grande; one sister, Mrs. Stella Grimmett of La Grande, and other relatives.
