Jesse L. Hindman

JESSE L. HINDMAN.- The well-known and public-minded citizen of Union county, whose name appears at the head of this article, is justly deserving of a representation in his county's history since he has for many years, and does at the present time, occupy a prominent position in its affairs, and since he is one of the leading financiers of the county, being also one of the heavy property owners, and has been, until his retirement from that field, one of its leading educators, manifesting throughout it all a noble character, integrity, and uprightness, that have won for him the admiration and confidence of the citizens of the entire county, as well as adjacent sections.

Jesse L. was born in Cedar county, Iowa, on October 3, 1859, being the son of John and Emily (Weeks) Hindman, natives respectively of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The parents came to Iowa in 1842, being tillers of the soil, the father also preaching for the Methodist denomination. On May 25, 1862, the mother died, and is buried in Cedar county. In 1875, the father came to Union county and then traveled over the state of Oregon for two and one-half years, then returned to Iowa, sold his possessions there and migrated to California, whence in a short time he returned to Iowa, and thence to Thayer county, Nebraska where he lived with his children until his demise, which occurred on May 9, 1901, and there he is buried. Our subject came to Union county with his father in 1873, and here he has remained since. In 1877 he commenced a career of teaching that was successful fro the inception, it being inaugurated in a little log school house that stood one mile north from the present site of Elgin, and he also taught the first school in Hindman district, located six miles east from Elgin. The latter school house was surrounded with a stockade to resist the attacks of the Bannock Indians who were then on the war path. For ten years Mr. Hindman taught in the county, and in 1884, upon the resignation of F.B. Collins, he was appointed superintendent of the county schools, Union and Wallowa being then one county. For two terms, in addition to the unexpired portion for which he was first appointed, he served the interests of the cause of education in this region and did much to place the same on a sound basis here. He pursued the policy of purchasing land as fast as he was able. In 1888 he had four hundred and eighty acres of land, six miles east from Elgin, and now he owns one section of fine farm land there. In 1889 he purchased two hundred and eight acres of land where Elgin now is, secured the location of the depot on his grounds and then platted the entire property and sold it except a few lots which he still retains and the six acres of grounds, where his beautiful home is located, being a fine, modern structure, elegant and commodious. The grounds are laid out with taste and are skillfully kept, the entire property being one of the attractive and handsome homes of the county. Mr. Hindman is stockholder and director of the Bank of Elgin, also chairman of the committee on finance, being amply fitted for that position because of his ability in this line. His farm is rented and he dwells in the city.

The marriage of Mr. Hindman and Miss Ida, daughter of Joseph A. and Miss Ida, daughter of Joseph A. and Priscilla (Harris) Knight, was solemnized in Union, Union county, on October 7, 1887, and three children have been born to them: Effie, Avis, who died February 9, 1893, being two years and eleven months of age, and hazel. Mrs. Hindman was born in this county on November 22, 1869.
