After attending a dance in Pendleton, Saturday night, William Holt of Baker, with three companions, Ben Griggs, Miss Helen Whitted and Miss Barbara Watkins of Pendleton, went on a joy ride in a Cadillac car. At a point about one-half mile west of Reith the car plunged over the grade and into the canyon below, about 120 feet, and was crashed into atoms on the huge boulders. Three of the inmates of the car, William Holt, Ben Griggs and Miss Watkins were killed out right and their bodies terribly mangled, the body of Holt being almost unrecognizable, as reported by those who reviewed the remains. Miss Whitted who was picked up unconscious and taken to the hospital at Pendleton where she has since hovered between life and death, but with chances for recovery.

News of the tragic accident reached Baker Sunday morning and several friends of Holt went to Pendleton and the scene of the crash. Holt had for the past three years been a driver for the Boise-Pendleton auto stage. He had been a resident of Baker since childhood. He was born in Andrew county, Mo., November 12, 1900. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Win Duncan of Medical Springs; Mrs. W.H. Gilkison of Haines, Mrs. John Wellingham of Sparta; Mrs. J.W. Gilkison of Baker. His father, M.S. Holt, formerly residing here, is in Missouri.

Funeral services for Holt were held at West's Chapel in Baker Thursday afternoon.

The other victims were buried in Pendleton Tuesday.
