LDS Church - LaGrande
(No longer in existence - see story at bottom of picture
- Janine)

This picture was taken the month I graduated from high school, June 1961. This was a beautiful old building that took up an entire city block. The main chapel had a beautiful large pipe organ in it and also a large balcony.
Downstairs was a second chapel, which was used for Primary, Mutual, etc. The gym which was semi-attached was also two stories. The top gym was the one used for basketball, large dances, etc. It also had a balcony and when my Dad was in grade school, which was about 2 blocks away, they used this gym for P.E. classes. The bottom story was called the recreation hall and it had a stage and was used for small dances, pot lucks, etc.
At the time this was taken, this was probably the oldest church building
in LaGrande. I don't remember just when it was built, but it
had been around for a long time. It was very sad when they
tore it down. But they did save some of the stained glass windows
and put them in the new one they built to take it's place.
The fore-runner of this building had been moved
at the time this one was built and it is down in the neighborhood where
I grew up, on Fir. The last I knew it was still in use as the
Family History Center. It (the older one) was one of the first
churches built in LaGrande, and the first LDS church built in the state
of Oregon.
