William T. MARTIN

JASPER V. MARTIN.- A number of men have made a good success of raising stock in Union county, but there are few if any who have so brilliantly gained distinction in this line as have the young man whose name is at the head of this article and who have also gained it right here by dint of careful and untiring attention to business, being dominated with a wisdom that was comprehensive and keen and guided him in the path of successful venture at every point of his interesting career.

In 1896 Mr. Martin married Miss Linne, daughter of J.F. Smith and one child was born to them, Harold V. On March 17, 1897, death entered the happy home of Mr. Martin and took thence his beloved wife. He is a member of the Christian church and his life is upright and exemplary in all of his ways, while he has the respect and good will of all.

On June 6, 1902, Mr. Martin contracted a second marriage, Miss Bernice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Banks, of Malheur City, Oregon, being the happy bride. She was born near Pendleton, Oregon, on September 16, 1880.

WILLIAM T. MARTIN. - It is beyond peradventure that the men who make up the population of Oregon have come from all the older commonwealths of the nation, and the Old Dominion state furnished to Union count a noble and capable tentleman when the subject of this sketch took up his abode here. Today Mr. Martin is one of the most substantial and well-known and successful men who have wrought in this couty, having brought into requisition his ability and energy to work out a success here that has materially added to the wealth and development of the county as well as making him one of the heavy property owners.

In Hamshire county, Virginia, on February 19,1842, our subject was born to Joseph and Mariah (Hinckle) Martin, natives respectively of Virginia and Pennsylvania. At Cove, in 1902, the mother was taken by death, but the fathe is still living iwth his son, the subject of this sketch, having attained his ninetieth year on February 16,1902. In 1853 William T. came with his parents to Iowa, remaining there until the spring of 1864, when they all participated in the long journey across the plains. They landed in Union county, where the father took up land and engaged in farming and stockraising until 1900, when he sold his ranch and moved to Cove to dwell with his daugher, Rebecca Tolly, whose husband, John Tolly, died in 1894. Mrs. Tolly was also called hence by death in July, 1901, and the father then took up his abode with William T., as formerly stated. In his native state and in Iowa, our subject was educated and when he came to Union county he took up land, the year being 1872, and the property situated three miles north from Medical springs. By the rights of homestead and pre-emption, he secured three hundred and twenty acres more by purchase. Three hundred acres of this fine estate are cultivated and the balance is timber and pasture. He gave his attention to general farming and raising stock and in all of his endeavors he received the success of intelligent thrift. But in September, 1901, he retired from the activities of business and removed to his present residence in Cove. He has an attractive dwelling and other property in addition to that mentioned.

On May 17, 1872, occurred the happy marriage of Mr. Martin and Miss Mary C., daughter of Daniel H. and Betsey Ann Lee, natives of Vermont and New York, respectively, and four children have come to bless the parents; Edward W., a physician in Kansas City; Rebecca, wife of J. Kochensparger; Lucian, on the ranch; Dwight in Cove. Mrs. Martin's father died in 1902 and her mother in 1861. Mr. Martin has always taken an active and intelligent interest in the affairs of the county and the district has profited by his sagacity and ability in the office of clerk and director, while he has devoted time to attend to the duties of road supervisor, believing it the part of the good citizen to assist in all these important matters. Mrs. Martin's father came via New York and Panama from the state of Michigan to San Francisco in 1852 and for a time wrought in the mines of the Golden State, then returned to Michigan by the same route in 1854 where he was married. After this he crossed the plains with ox teams to California about 1857, returning in 1858 by the Panama route. He lived after this in Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, and in 1872 came by rail to Kelton, Utah, and thence overland to the Grande Ronde valley in 1872. he was one of the intrepid and worthy pioneers of the west, as have been the subjectof this sketch and his estimable wife, who are now valuable members of the society of our county and among its most substantial and worthy citizens, having displayed those qualities of worth and characteristics of uprightness and integrity that commend them to all.
