These are obituaries that I and many others have donated. Mine were transcribed from old newspapers. I got the microfilms through interlibrary loan from the University of Oregon. There are also many others who have donated. If there is no contributor on it, it is something I have transcribed. If there is no link on the contributor's name, they have no further information about that person. It is someone extra on a copy of their families information.

F.D. McCully passes away;
pioneer of County was leader in various activities.

Frank D. McCULLY d. at home in Joseph, OR, 13 Mar 1939; health had been failing for several years; funeral at Methodist Church, burial in the Indian plot on Wallowa Lake (permission given by Bureau of Indian Affairs). ".. name has been a household word in Wallowa County for nearly 30 years."

He established the first store in Joseph, the first bank, the first public water works, first electric plant, and first flour mill in Wallowa County. He ran stage lines between Union County railroad terminals and Joseph, and brought one of the first automobiles to Wallowa County. He had a forwarding (?) and merchandizing business, and was instrumental in inducing Union Pacific Railroad to build into Wallowa County.

In 1886, as a State Representative from Wallowa County, he introduced the bill to establish wallowa County. Later, he served as a Wallowa County commissioner. late in life, he was a receiver (?) for two national banks under the Coptroller of Currency, and was a field agent for the Oregon State Land Board. he also ran the Imnaha mail line in later life. He was a staunch Republican, and was repeatedly head of the Wallowa County Republican organization.

He was b. Salem, OR 1859; attended Willamette University; came to Union, OR, in 1872; came with cattle to Wallowa valley in 1874, back in 1879 and in 1880 settled. His homestead included what is now part of the city of Joseph. In 1881, he married Julia HAMBLETON (HAMILTON?); two children survive, Roy C. McCULLY (Portland) and Mrs. Lelia M. BALLINGER (she and her husband W.H. BALLINGER of Portland); their third son Wilmer McCULLY d. ca 1914 (his widow martha McCULLY living in La Grande, OR).

On 19 Nov 1908 Frank M. Martha E. DUNBAR. She was still living in 1939, as were their son Frank D. McCULLY Jr., grandson Frank D. McCULLY iii, and two step-children Raymond DUNBAR (Alameda, CA) and Mrs. Lucille (DUNBAR) KELLOGG(Portland).

Also at funeral was Mrs. A.E. JOHNSON of Portland, sister of Martha E. Dunbar McCULLY.

Year-long illness takes life of F.D. McCully, 79.

Frank D. McCully d. 14 Mar 1939 at his home in Joseph, OR, after a yearlong illness; "the father of Wallowa County"; 1st republican representative elected to the State legislature from Union Co.; elected in 1886, immediately introduced a bill to create Wallowa Co.

Born Salem, OR 2 Jun 1859; attended Willamette University; started out in business at age 15; came to Union, OR, in 1872; 1874 made his first visit to wallowa Valley; 1879 returned there with a large herd of cattle; 1880, left the livestock business, opened a general store in Joseph, the first store in that town.

The townsite of Joseph is on Frank's preemption land claim, and much of the property still remains in his estate; owned stores in Joseph, Lostine, and Flora; was once president of the First bank of Joseph, the Joseph Milling Co., the Joseph electric light plant, and the Joseph waterworks. He once owned the phone line from Union Co. to Joseph and to Anatone, WA.

1881 m. Julia HAMBLETON of Missouri, 3 children: Wilmer, Roy and Lelia; Frank and Julia divorced; m. 2nd Martha E. DUNBAR, Frank D. McCULLY Jr. their only child; Frank D. McCULLY III the only grandchild.

Frank D. McCully

Frank D. McCully died at his home in Joseph, OR, 13 Mar 1939. He organized and operated the first store in Joseph, the first bank, the first electric company, the first water system and the first flour mill. He was elected as State congressman from Union Co. 1886, and introduced the bill that created Wallowa County. He was active in having the Union Pacific Railroad built into the county, after he had run the local stageline for years.

After retirement, he was a receiver for two banks under the Comptroller of Currency, was a field representative for the State Land Board, and later contracted for and operated the Imnaha stage line.

He was b. Salem, OR 2 Jun 1859; came to eastern Oregon as a boy with stockmen in 1872, returned to live in 1880; married Julia Hambelton, two children surviving- Roy C. McCully and Mrs. W.H. Ballinger of Portland; m. 2nd Martha E. Dunbar 19 Nov 1908; she survived him and does their son Frank D. McCully Jr.

Fred F. McCULLY

Fred Fletcher MCCULLY, father of Kermit MCCULLY, of La Grande, died in a La Grande hospital Friday. Funeral services were held Monday in the Wallowa Methodist church with interment in the Prairie Creek cemetery at Joseph.

He was born at Lebanon, October 8, 1870, and when about ten years of age, his parents came to Wallowa county where he grew to manhood. Joseph was the home of the deceased for a long time and he was cashier of the bank there; later he moved to Wallowa where he was active in community affairs and where he was city recorder at the time of his death.

Besides his son here, he leaves his widow, Margaret MCCULLY, of Wallowa. There is also one grandson Jerry MCCULLY.

John William McCully

A pioneer of '52, John William McCully dies at the home of his daughter at Lowden, Wash.(1911-Newspaper source unknown, family scrapbook)

John William McCULLY b. 22 Feb 1847, New London, Henry Co., IA; came to Union Co., OR, 1872, resided there and in Wallowa County ever since; he was a freighter in early life, later living on his farm at Lostine, OR.

He returned to Elgin, OR, "last fall" (1910), when he was afflicted with Bright's Disease; he rallied somewhat, but then died while on a visit to his dau. Mrs. Hetta COMPAU at Lowden, WA 23 May 1911; funeral at Christian Church (in Elgin?), to which denomination he has belonged since 1889.

He married Sarah Jane OWNBY at Union, OR, 5 May 1883, had 3 children living in 1911: Hetta McCULLY COMPAU (Lowden, WA), Willard McCULLY (Lostine, OR), and Floyd McCULLY (Elgin, OR).

Living siblings 1911: Estelle McCULLY GILBERT (Salem), Mary McCULLY CREIGHTON (Portland, OR), Alfred McCULLY (Newburg, OR) and Frank D. McCULLY (Joseph, OR).

FORMER HAINES WOMAN INHERITS A FORTUNE

Mrs. Alice De Line, 1236 street, cash, one-half interest in the proceeds from the sale of certain real estate, and one-half the residuary estate under the will of her late brother, Robert W. McCully, which was filed for probate in surrogat's court in New York recently.

Mr. McCully died in New York City May 7 last leaving an estate over $200,000," according to the will.
