Don M'Lachlen Answers Call
Death Comes After Brief Illness
Funeral to be held from the Home Tomorrow Afternoon at 2 O'clock

Donald A. McLachlen aged 37, died last midnight after an illness of less than a month brought about by hardening of arteries. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the J. H. McLachlen home, 1803 Third street. His life has been despaired for several days and the end came about midnight last night. His son Archie was called from Portland, and his near relations were assembled in the home of his father, J. H. McLachlen when the end came. The relatives surviving are the father, ex-chief of police and mother, one daughter, Florence Donohue, Archie, a son, a sister Helen, and an uncle Archie McLachlen.

Don McLachlen was born in Caledonia, near Rochester, N. Y., in 1877 and when 10 years old came to the West with his parents. They lived at Sprague, Wash., for a year and then came to La Grande, where they have lived to date. While here Mr. McLachlen was a member of the volunteer fire department for many years, and attained a statewide renown as a billiard and pool player. He was a painter by trade.

Man Who Lead Posse Which Captured Til Taylor's Slayers Dies
Accident Given As Death Cause
Funeral Services For Pioneer Union County Officer Will Be Held Here Saturday

John H. McLachlen, pioneer officer of Union County, died at the Grande Ronde hospital Thursday. Ten days ago while picking apples, he fell from the tree, breaking three ribs. The injuries and the shock to a man of his advanced years, are said to have caused his death.

Funeral services will be held at the Snodgrass and Zimmerman mortuary at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with the Odd Fellows in charge. Burial will take place in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.

Mr. McLachlen was born in Caledonia, New York in the year 1850. He was 83 years, one month and 20 days of age.

He came to Oregon in the year 1887, locating in La Grande where he lived continuously except for eight years at Union while serving as sheriff of this county.

The major portion of his life saw him connected with law enforcement work, and for several years he was chief of police in La Grande.

At the age of 70 he headed the posse which captured the slayers of Til Taylor, sheriff of Umatilla county, several years ago.

Mr. McLachlen had a wide circle of friends throughout Eastern Oregon who were saddened by news of his death. He is survived by his widow Mrs. Mary McLachlen, a daughter Nell; a brother Archie, of May Park; a granddaughter, Mrs. Ed Donohue of La Grande; a grandson, Archie McLachlen, of Boise, and five grandchildren.

He was a charter member of the La Grande Lodge of Elks and a member of the Odd Fellows lodge.

Mrs. McLachlen Dies Wednesday; Funeral Friday

Mrs. Mary McLachlen, a pioneer resident of La Grande, passed away on Wednesday, her death terminating in lingering illness.

The body is at the Snodgrass and Zimmerman mortuary where funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with burial in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.

Born in Rochester, N. J. [sic - N. Y.] Aug. 18, 1850, she was 83 years, three months and 25 days of age. Her husband, John McLachlen, preceded her in death Nov. 2 of this year. They were married in 1871, then coming to Oregon and locating shortly afterwards in La Grande where they resided until death.

Mrs. McLachlen is survived by a daughter, Helen, of La Grande, a granddaughter, Mrs. Ed Donohue, of La Grande; a grandson, Archie, of Boise; two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Williams, of Oakland, Cal., and Mrs. Mattie E. Ward of St. Johns, Mich., and five great grandchildren.
