Jefferson W. SCRIBER

JEFFERSON W. SCRIBER is one of the most prominent men of Union county, having displayed an ability in his business that has justly entitled him to this prestige. He is cashier of the Farmers and Traders National Bank of Lagrande, which is one of the leading financial institutions of the eastern part of Oregon, and under his skillful management has been built up in the last decade from a start to its present prominence.

Mr. Scriber was born in Marion county, Oregon, on April 22, 1836, being the son of Charles W. and Mary J. (Griffith) Scribner. The father came to this country from the state of New York, doubling Cape Horn, and landing in Portland in 1848, while the same year the mother came across the plains with her people to Vancouver, Washington, at which place occurred the marriage of Mr. Charles W. Scriber and Miss Mary J. Griffith, after which they went to Marion county and settled on a homestead. Our subject was reared on a farm for the first decade of his existence and then was taken to Salem, where his father wrought at the blacksmith's trade. Until fourteen Jefferson W. was engaged in mastering the technical part of education and he then entered the service of the express company as messenger, serving three years. Then he wrought three years with his father at the forge and at the age of twenty he went to work on a farm for ten years, then engaged himself to the Capitol National Bank as bookkeeper, where he served faithfully until 1890, the year of his advent into Union county. Here he opened the Farmers and Traders national Bank, which was incorporated with a capital of sixty thousand dollars, and has since accumulated a surplus of eleven thousand dollars. The skill and ability of Mr. Scriber were manifested from the start, and his deferential treatment of his patrons and wise investments and excellent financial wisdom have gained a patronage for the institution that has enabled the payment of some good dividends to the stockholders. The bank owns a fine building on one of the most prominent corners of the city, is provided with all the best safes and vaults, besides having safety deposit boxes. Mr. Scriber also owns a comfortable home, among the most attractive of the city, which is presided over by his estimable wife, whose graciousness is displayed in a becoming manner in the center of a large circle of admiring friends. The marriage of Mr. Scriber and Miss Ella S., daughter of Austin B. and Jane Leonard, was solemnized on December 5, 1878. Three children have come to bless and gladden the home: Clare J., Lloyd C. and Leonard A. Mrs. Scriber's parents are now living in Marion county, having come thither from Ohio in 1849, and are respected citizens of this commonwealth. Mr. Scriber's parents are both living in Salem. Mr. Scriber is a member of the B.P.O.E., Lagrande Lodge, No. 433, and of the K. of P., Red Cross Lodge No. 27; and of the A.O.U.W., all of Lagrande. Mr. and Mrs. Scriber are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and are active in the work of their denomination, as in all good undertakings for the benefit of the people. Mr. Scriber has risen from beating the anvil to his present position by force of steady and hard work and strict attention to business and honorable treatment of his fellows, having manifested rare ability and excellent judgment.
