"Summary extract from "Oregon Department of Transportation Survey"
describing 23 sites in Union County. The report issue date is Dec 15, 1978.
It was assembled by Robert Gormsen and Irene Hammer of DOT.
Most entries include year the cemetery was established (an apparent
reference to oldest existing grave stone marker), location of the site
and general condition at the time of the survey. Please note: These descriptions
are more than 20 years old.

ACKLES-1866
Four acres (B): moderately tended. Located two miles north of La
Grande on Glenn Road. Records maintained by La Grande Cemetery District.
CALVARY-1895 (Roman Catholic Cemetery, originally)
Four acres (D): fully tended. Located on 12th Street in La Grande.
Records and maintenance by La Grande Cemetery District.
COVE-1865
15 acres (D): fully tended. Located on hill half-mile southeast
of town. Records and maintenance by City of Cove.
ELGIN-1880
10 acres (D): fully tended. Located half-mile southeast of town
on Clark Creek. Records and maintenance by City of Elgin.
GALLOWAY-1876
Half acre (B): moderately tended. Site is 1.5 miles north of Elgin
on Rockwall Grange Road. Records and maintenancy by City of Elgin
GRANDVIEW-1895 (Formerly, the I.O.O.F. Cemetery)
Forty acres (B): fully tended. Located half-mile southeast of La
Grande on Foothill Road. Records and maintenancy by La Grande Cemetery
District.
HIGHLAND-1880 (A.K.A. Cricket Flat Cemetery)
Five acres (C): moderately tended. Located half-mile north of Hwy
82 on gravel road; junction is 4.2 miles northeast of Elgin.
HILGARD-1885
Two acres (B): moderately tended. Located half-mile north of Hilgard.
Private cemetery, maintained by La Grande Cemetery Districts.
Vicky Gray sent me an e-mail stating that Hilgard Cemetery is a private
cemetery and is not maintained by any district in Union County
HILLCREST-1895 (Formerly the Masonic Cemetery)
15 acres (E): fully tended. Entrance on Avenue G in the city of
La Grande. Site is bounded by E and H Avenues, 10th and 12th Streets. Records
and maintenancy by La Grande Cemetery District.
INDIAN CREEK-1880
Half acre (A): abandoned to nature. Located 5 miles southeast of
Elgin on Indian Creek Road where it intersects a gravel road.
ISLAND CITY-1890
Eight acres (D): fully tended. Located half-mile south of Island
City on Hunter Lane. Records and maintenancy by La Grande Cemetery Districts.
La GRANDE CEMETERY-1863
In dissuse by 1910. Graves moved to Hillcrest Cemetery in 1929.
Original site was four acres on property now occupied by Eastern Oregon
State College.
MT. PLEASANT (Also called SCOTT Cemetery)-1900
One acre (A): moderately tended. Location is on Palmer Junction
Road, 4.5 miles north of its intersection with Hwy 82 at Minam Hill summit.
NIBLEY-1898
Lost site (A): Somewhere along Cove road, five miles west of Cove.
Abandoned by 1910, area was farmed after 1950. Records preserved by LDS
church. No trace of site is found today.
NORTH POWDER-1875
15 acres (D): fully tended. Located in northeastern corner of North
Powder city limits on highway to Union. Maintained by City.
THE PARK (Cemetery not named)-1875
One acre (B): moderately tended. Located 16.4 miles southeast of
Union on Hwy 203, in pine grove 100 yards north of highway.
PINE GROVE-1900
Half acre (B): moderately tended. Located half-mile from nearest
road; i.e., from Pine Grove Church, 8 miles east of Elgin on Hwy 82.
STARKEY-1882
Half acre (A): abandoned to nature. Atop timbered knoll, along fence
line, 1/4 mile east of nearest road. Site is approximately 3/4 mile south
of Hwy 244 at a point 13 miles southwest of junction with I-80 north.
SUMMERVILLE-1866(A.K.A.SUMMERVILLE-IMBLER Cemetery)
15 acres (D): fully tended. Site is 1.5 miles northest of Imbler
on Dry Creek Road, 3/4 mile southeast of Summerville
UNION-1862
10 acres (D): fully tended. At the eastern edge of City of Union.
WEAVER-1870
Lost family cemetery (A): Located on Indian Creek Road 2.5 miles
southeast of Elgin, in field above house. Stone grave markers moved to
Elgin Cemetery about 1950. Plots farmed over; no remaining visible traces.
Private.
WRIGHT-(Lower Cove Road)-1870
Four acres (B): moderately tended. Private. On the Wright farm,
atop a hillside 100 yards north of Lower Cove Road.
WRIGHT-(Medical Springs)-1800
Half acre (A); abandoned to nature. Located at Medical Springs,
on edge of bluff immediately above and northeast of intersection. Burials
listed on large single marker.
