Bina Leona (Burford) VanSCHOONHOVEN
Icis L. Van Blokland, 91, of Tigard and formerly of La Grande, died Tuesday, Dec 25, 1990, at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland.
A private family interment service was held Friday at the Island City Cemetery. A memorial service will be held later.
Mrs. Van Blokland was born Aug. 21, 1899, at Kansas City, Mo., to Haskell and Letitia (Halstead) Bryant. She moved to Island City in 1912 and married Ray Van Blokland on Oct. 14, 1924. He died in 1949. Following her husband's death, she moved to La Grande where she lived until moving to Tigard in 1987.
She was a lifelong member of the La Grande United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Ruth Robinson Circle and was a member of the Chapter I, P.E.O. Sisterhood for 69 years.
Survivors include her daughters Virginia Robertson of Tigard and Marjorie Folsom of Aloha; one granddaughter and two great-grandsons.
Memorials may be made in her name to the La Grande United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in care of Payne Family Mortuary, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande.

Mrs. Adelaide Vandecar formerly a resident of this place but lately of Portland, passed away April 24, age 77 years.

Eva C. Vandermulen, 88, La Grande, died Sunday, Jan 28, at Mountain Vista Care Center.
She was born Sept. 11, 1901 to William and Iantha (Stevenson) Bay. She married Roy E. Vandermulen on Dec. 24, 1919.
Survivors include daughters, Juanita Hyde, Baker, Dorothy Pound, Seattle, and Bethel Gruis, La Grande; sister, Ella Kolb, Portland; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Her husband, Roy, a sister, Maude Applegate, and brothers Ira, Guy and Roy Bay died earlier.
A funeral will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday and Payne Family Mortuary. The Rev. Irwin Smutz of Imbler Christian Church will officiate. A concluding service and burial will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.
Friends may call at Payne Family Mortuary from noon until 9 p. m. Wednesday.

Roy E. Vandermulen, 93, La Grande, died Monday afternoon at Mountain Vista Care Center.
Mr. Vandermulen was born Oct. 16, 1895 in La Grande to Orange and Eleanor (Edwards) Vandermulen. He married Eva Claris Bay on Dec. 24, 1919 in La Grande.
He was a farmer near Summerville most of his adult life. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Claris Vandermulen, La Grande; daughters, Juanita L. Hyde, Baker, Dorothy J. Pound, Seattle, and Bethel M. Gruis, La Grande; sister Ruth Grace Bay, Hilgard; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A brother, Bonnie Vandermulen and a sister, Pansy Skillings, died earlier.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Payne Family Mortuary with the Rev. Bruce McConnell of the La Grande United Methodist Church officiating.
A concluding service and interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary E. (Messenger) Van Houten, daughter of Colonel E. and Elizabeth M. Messenger, and wife of W. P. Van Houten, was born in Marion county, Ohio, January 14, 1848, and died in Baker City, Oregon, December 27, 1905, aged 57 years, 11 months and 13 days.
She was married to W. P. Van Houten, October 10, 1866, at Marion, Ohio, and came west wither her husband and family in 1891, and settled in Union county where she has lived ever since. She was the mother of ten children nine of whom are still living, four girls and five boys. One married daughter lives in Ohio, and one in Union, Oregon.
Mrs. Van Houten was converted to God in middle life and became a member of the church and died with implicit faith in the Redeemer whom she has gone to meet. She was a loving, tender mother and an affectionate wife, and beside her immediate family and loved ones, leaves many near and dear friends to mourn her loss.

Frank Vanderwall, rancher and resident of Rock Creek neighborhood for many years, passed this life at the state hospital in Pendleton Tuesday of this week. He was a native of Holland and was about 70 years of age at the time of his death. At one time he owned one of the finest ranches in Rock Creek district. He disposed of this several years ago, and since that time until his health failed about a year ago, he had made his home in Rock Creek village. At the time of his committment to the state hospital his estate was appraised at a value of $76,000. He was never married. He was a brother of G.W. Vanderwall of Haines. He also leaves a sister at Linden, Wn. There are no other immediate relatives in the United States.
Funeral services were held in Haines and burial was made in the Coles cemetery Thursday afternoon.

Funeral services over the remains of the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vanderwall who passed away in Salem, Tuesday, were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Haines Thursday afternoon. Miss Blokland officiating. Interment was in the Cole cemetery. The community extended their sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Vanderwall.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Bina Leona Van Schoonhoven of Cove will be held tomorrow, Thursday, afternoon at 2:00 from the M. E. Church in Cove, Rev. Callahan in charge.
Mrs. Van Schoonhoven was born in Cove February 13, 1902 and has lived in that vicinity all her life. About 12 years ago she married Simeon Van Schoonhoven and to that union one son Johnny, aged about 9 years, was born. Both her husband and son survive her. She is also survived by four sisters, Mesdames Vivian Mytinger of Pendleton, Hazel Hartley of Cove, Opel Gassett, Cove; Letha Parr, Everett Washington and Mrs. D. Gauthier of Union; Six brothers, William, Orphia, Frank, and Archie Burford all of Union, Arthur of Sand Point, Idaho, and Claude of Salem, Oregon.
Services will be in charge of Snodgrass & Zimmerman.

Cove Resident Passes -- Funeral To Be Thursday
Mrs. Bina Leona Van Schoonhoven, known to her many friends as Mrs. Van, died at the Grande Ronde hospital at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon of chronic nephritis. She was a resident of Cove.
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church at Cove at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, with Rev. C. C. Callahan officiating. Burial will follow in the Cove cemetery with Snodgrass and Zimmerman in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Schoonhoven was born at Cove Feb. 13, 1902 and was 35 years, eight months and 13 days of age. She is survived by her widowed husband, Simeon, a son Johnny, five sisters and six brothers ----- Mrs. Vivian Mytinger, of Pendleton; Mrs. Hazel Hartley, of Cove; Mrs. Opel Gassett, of Cove; Mrs. Letha Parr, of Everett, Wash; Mrs. D. Gauthier, Union; William, Orphia, Frank and Archie Burford, all of Union; Arthur Burford, of Sandpoint, Id., and Claude Burford, of Salem.
Note: Mrs. D. Gauthier was not a sister. They should have listed up Mrs. Ruth Cockrell instead.

Simeon M. (S. M. VANN) VANSCHOONHOVEN, age 84, passed away Monday, May 2. He was a life long farmer in the Cove area. Funeral services were held at the Cove Episcopal Church. Rev. Clarence Kopp conducted the service. Interment was at the Cove Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, John VANSCHOONHOVEN of Lake Oswego, Ore. on sister, Elizabeth GAUTHIER, Cove; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Osakis, Minn, Mr. VAN SCHOONHOVEN had resided in Cove most of his life. He was a member of Mt. Fannie Grange.

Died-At Union, Ore., Tuesday, February 22, 1927, Olga, wife of John Vass, age 54 years, 11 month and 18 days.
Mrs. Olga Vass, wife of John Vass, was born in Norway, Jan. 3, 1873. She came to the United States when a child with her parents, and lived in Nebraska until they moved to Oregon, where she was married to Chas. Anderson, from which union there was one son, C. M. Anderson, now living in Cambridge, Idaho. Later she married at The Dalles, Oregon, John Vass, some 18 years ago. She has lived at Union for the past three years, where, after suffering severely for many months she passed away as above noted.
She leaves behind-her husband, present with her in this city; her father, Chris Olsen, an her mother of Baker, Ore.; three sisters-Mrs. Alma Hickers, Mrs. Sophia Phillips, Mrs. Stenie Koltson, all of Baker, Ore., a brother, Al Olsen, living in Baker, Oregon. Three brothers and one sister preceded her to the other side some years ago. There is also one grandson, Richard Anderson.
She was a member of the local Women’s Relief Corps and a member of the Lutheran church
The funeral was held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, Rev. Lee conducting the service. Special music by the choir. Mrs. Vass was a member of Preston Women’s Relief Corps No. 22 and ritualistic ceremonies were held at the church. Interment in the Union cemetery.

Per Bev. Augusta's parents were Christian and Engburg Olson. They lived in Baker along with sisters Alma, Sophia, Christie Colson, (listed in above obituary as Stenie Koltson). There was also a sister named Amma and brothers Alfred and Charley, who are listed. They were all born after 1873. Christine, Amma and Alma were born in Kansas.

Herman C. Volknennant, a former resident of this city and a resident of this vicinity for the past thirty-five years, died in Portland last Saturday and the body was shipped to Baker. The funeral took place from the chapel of West and Co. Tuesday afternoon under the auspices of Baker I.O.O.F. Lodge, Rev. Samuel Gregg of the Christian church officiating. The deceased was a native of Germany and came to this section from Davenport, Iowa, when a young man and engaged in the saloon business in North Powder, where he lived until several years ago. For the past three years he has been a resident of Portland undergoing treatment at a hospital. He was about 65 years old.

Weimer Von Winkler, station agent at Union, died Wednesday morning at the Grande Ronde hospital, following a short illness. It is reported that typhoid was the cause of death. Mr. Von Winkler was brought into La Grande last Saturday. He was aged 34 years and was employed at Union only about a week before his illness. Previous to that time, he was at the Bohnenkamp chapel, awaiting instructions from the father and mother who lived at Bellingham, Washington. - La Grande Observer.
