Ethel Fay (FISHER) DOWNING

Wallowa county native, Ethel Fay Downing, died Tues.. Nov. 28, 1995, at the Wallowa County Nursing Home where she had been a resident for 2 1/2 years. She had lived at local retirement homes from August 1991 until she entered the nursing home in May of 1993.

She was born Aug. 27, 1904, in the Leap area of Wallowa county, the daughter of Harvey James and Hattie Ellen (Bloom) Fisher. On Aug. 25, 1921, she married William McKinley Downing in Enterprise. They continued to make their home in Wallowa county. Ethel worked for several years as a finish presser at two local dry cleaning establishments. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Caring for her family was always the most important part of her life. She enjoyed working in her yard and flower beds as long as her health allowed.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Murna Downing, daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Bud Estes, all of Enterprise; grandsons, Clark Downing of Enterprise, Allen Estes of Lostine, Larry Estes and wife, Laurel of Enterprise; six great grandchildren, Tina and Terri Downing of Enterprise, Brain, Mark and Kerri Estes of Enterprise and Dean Estes of Lostine; step-granddaughter and her husband, Shawna and Zene Wilks of Wallowa; and great great step-grandson, Christopher Wilks of Wallowa; two sisters, Alta Stein and Myrtle Aleson, both of Enterprise; and many nieces and nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie, in 1969, grandson Michael Downing in 1967, brothers Willie, Harry, Bruce, Frank and Ira Fisher; and sisters, Iva Downing and Cora Freudenberg.

Services were held Sat. Dec. 2, at the Bollman Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Raedeke officiating. Vault interment followed in the Enterprise Cemetery.

Services Held For Iva Downing

Memorial services for Mrs. Frank A. Downing, who passed away at Wallowa Memorial Hospital on Friday, July 31, 1969 after being a patient for 5 months, were held Monday at 10am at the Bollman Chapel. Rev. Gary Johnson, pastor of the Wallowa Christian church officiated and Mrs. Nyda Scott was organist and soloist singing "A Golden Tomorrow" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Casket bearers were Morris and Delbert Pratt, Richard Brock, Fred Hemelwright, Elzie Makin and Jay Ward, and vault entombment was in the Enterprise cemetery.

Iva Jane Fisher was the daughter of Harvey and Hattie Fisher and was born at Cove on Nov. 1, 1887. On Nov. 1, 1905 she was married at Wallowa to Frank A. Downing, who proceeded here in death on Jan. 13, 1958. She had lived in Wallowa County for 75 years and for the past few years had lived at Alder Slope. Survivors include, one daughter, Mrs. James (Faye) Weaver of Enterprise; three brothers, Harry L. Fisher of Spokane, and Bruce and Ira Fisher, both of Milton-Freewater; three sisters, Mrs. John (Alta) Stein, Mrs. William (Ethel) Downing, and Mrs. Julius (Myrtle) Aleson, all of Enterprise; one granddaughter, Mrs. Dale (Kathryn) Tankersley of Boise, Idaho and three great grandchildren.

Bill Downing Services Held

William M. Downing, a lifetime resident of Wallowa county, and a retired mill worker, passed away at the Wallowa Memorial Hospital, Wed. night Dec. 3, 1969 following a lengthily illness. Son of Joshua and Ellie Downing, he was born in the Leap area of the county on May 18, 1897.

On Aug. 25, 1921 he was married to Ethel Fay Fisher at Enterprise.

He was a veteran of W.W.I. Survivors include his wife, Ethel; a son, Ross, and a daughter, Mrs. Bud (Edith) Estes, all of Enterprise; two brothers, Joshua of Caldwell, Idaho and Harvey of Jerome, Idaho; two sisters, Ms. Zelnie Lathrop of Enterprise, and Mrs. Joe (Wilma) Fagan of Waitsburg, Wash., and three grandchildren. Memorial services were held Sat. at 2pm at the Bollman Chapel with Rev. James E. Jones officiating. Interment followed in the Enterprise cemetery.
