John Johnson Kelly was born in Pulaski Co., KY. He married America Bramble Miller, daughter of Richard and Margaret (Stanton) Miller on 1 Sept. 1853 in Marion Co., Oregon Territory. John J. and America Kelly appear on the Scio 1860 census with children: Mary, James, and William. They appear on the Franklin Butte 1870 census with additional children: Viola R., Thomas W., and Miles H. They appear on the 1880 Franklin Butte census with children: J. Henry, W. Richard, V. Ann, Miles H., Clifford W., and Maud.

John died at Dufur, Wasco Co., OR. America died at Scio. They had eight children: Mary Jane (who married William Queener), James Henry, William Richard, Viola Ann (who married John G. Holt), John Edward, Miles Hale, Clifford Wayne, and Lily Maud.
