Leonard W. Jones, liveryman, Tory, was born in Canton township, this county, March 15, 1851, a son of John B. and Betsey (Crandall) Jones. His father came to Bradford county about 1818, and located in Canton township, where he cleared and improved a farm and died there. He reared a family of eleven children as follows: Lewis, Vincent K., Ellen (Mrs. George Streeter), John, Leonard W., Andrew, Rosette (Mrs. Sniffin Vermilyea), Josephine (Mrs. Frank Whiteman), Merrick, Alice and Mary (Mrs. Charles Rodebaugh). Leonard W. was reared in Canton township, and after attaining his majority engaged in farming, until 1890, when he located in Troy, and embarked in the livery business as a member of the firm of Steele & Jones, which he continued seven months, since which time he has conducted a successful business alone. In 1879 he married Ella L., daughter of Edward and Josephine (Wright) Rodebaugh, of Canton, and they have two children: Walter and Helen. He is a member of the Church of Christ; in politics he is a Republican.

(Local News) Reports continue to be received of American soldiers killed in battle, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Crandle of Grover, have such a report concerning their son, Ray Crandle. He was with the Company L Boys and had seen considerable service. Floyd Parmenter is another. He formerly resided at Gillett but went to war from the employ of the Elmira trolley lines on which he served as a motorman. He was killed Oct. 24th.

Edgerton C. Crandell, who has been engaged in business in North Star for a number of years, is the treasurer of North Star township, Gratiot county. Mr. Crandell's birth occurred July 19, 1862, in County Brant, Ontario, son of Laban B. and Margaret (Trimble) Crandell, residents of Ithaca, the former of whom was born in County Brant, while the latter was a native of Ireland. They were the parents of nine children, all of whom are living, and our subject was the second member of the family.

Edgerton C. Crandell received a common school education, and up to the age of eighteen years, remained in his native county. He then came, with his parents, to Gratiot county, settling in North Star township, where Mr. Crandell resided for several years. He had learned the harness maker's trade in Ontario, and followed that line in different places. Since 1889 he has lived in North Star township, part of that time being spent in farming on his eighty acres of finely improved land. In Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 29, 1888, Mr. Crandell was united in marriage with Minnie Hassalbach, a native of New York City, daughter of Frederick and Ellinora (Brauer) Hassalbach, the former of whom died in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1865, while the latter still survives. To Mr. and Mrs. Crandell have been born two children, Laura and Paul.

Mr. Crandell is a prominent member of the Democratic party, and held the office of township clerk for three years. Since the spring of 1904 he has been township treasurer. He is a member of Ithaca Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; Heath Lodge No. 252, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; of the Knights of the Modern Maccabees; and the Ancient Order of Gleaners. He and his wife are valued members of the Baptist Church.

Mary Crandall Towner
Smyrna, March 19 --- The death of Mrs. Mary E Towner which occurred at her home in this village at an early hour Monday morning, March 8, 1920, removed one of the older and most respected residents of the place and she will be greatly missed in her home where she constantly presided, looking after the wants and happiness of the family, in the community where she made so many warm friends during her stay of nearly sixty years. She had many friends in the Methodist Episcopal church of which she was a member for many years and where she was a faithful attendant while her health permitted.

She was born in the town of Sherburne on July 23, 1845, and on May 14, 1861, was united in marriage to Leonard S Towner of this place and came here at once to take up her residence which has since been her home continually, with the exception of three years. To them were born six children, Frank, who died at an early age, Arthur A. of Syracuse, George and Phillip Alfred of Norwich, Walter B of Binghamton and Sarah of this place.

During her last illness she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, who has been her faithful and constant companion and assistant during the last years of her stay. The last few weeks she was assisted by members of the family and friends.

Besides her children and two grandsons, G Munson and Claud Towner of Norwich, she is survived by four brothers, Frank Crandall of Norfolk, NY, and Edgar, Oscar and Byron Crandall of Sherburne and two sisters, Mrs. Vincent Smith of Norwich and Mrs. Frank Davison of Sherburne.

The funeral services were held from the home on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, the Rev. W S York, pastor of the M E church, assisted by Rev. George Lusty, officiating. The remains were placed in the vault of Sherburne West Hill pending burial there in the family plot in the spring.

For instance, he said that Hosa Crandall was his uncle and that his son "Jack" (Andrew Jackson) was his first cousin also that he helped him when he remodeled the Old Ways Tavern in Binghamton, when Jack married Eliza Way.

Roe, Joseph Frankiln, M.D.
Born in Candor, NY, June 27, 1872, son of William Frankiln and Eliza Jennings (Rodgers) Roe. His early education was recieved in the district schools near his farm home, graduated from Ohio State University Medical College and served as intern at Cleveland Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He spent two years at Vienna University and in 1898, he came to Binghamton, taking up the practice of his chosen profession. He rose steadily to prominence and for many years had been numbered among the most successful and noteworthy specialists in Western New York. He was a member of the National Opthalmological and Otological Society, the American Institute of Homeopathy, the New York State Medical Association, and the Broome County Medical Society. H e was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Binghamton Club and the Rotary Club. He married in 1899, Myrtle Lucilla Bodle, daughter of Daniel and Lucinda (Crandall) Bodle. Mrs. Roe was granddaughter of Andrew J. Crandall, one of Binghamton's earliest settlers who built the famous holstery, the "Crandall House". They adopted a daughter, Beverly, who was six months of age.
