May 19, 1904. Bruce Verne Crandall Bruce Verne Crandall, son of Lathan Augustus and Mary (Nichols) Crandall was born October 16,1873 in Hillsdale, Mich. In the little town where his father was studying at Hillsdale College. Son(and grandson) of Baptist ministers' 'a lived in a number of different towns and cities In New York and Ohio during his father's several pastorates. Following his father's acceptance of the na3torate of the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio the family moved to that city where he studied at Western Reserve College in 1891-1892. After the death of his mother he left college and began his business career in Chicago where the family has moved in 1892. He began as an office boy with Franklin MacVeagh and Co. He was employed with the "Railway Review” from 1896 to 1900 and the “Railway Master Mechanic” from 1900 to 1908. On December 8, 1898 he married Minnie Belle Smith, daughter of Willard Adelbert and Maria (Dickinson) Smith. To them were born four children, Bruce Nichols, Willard Smith, Mary Elysabeth and Margaret Louise. In 1906 he moved with his family to the Chicago suburb of Kenilworth where he built a home and was an active participant in the town affairs, helping organize the Kenilworth Club, serving as a member of the school board and in other capacities. In 1907 he joined the Three Lakes Rod and Gun Club at Three Lakes, Wisconsin where he owned a home and spent his summers for nearly forty years. He was president of his own business, the Bruce V. Crandall Service, Inc. from 1908 to 1922. Subsequently he was editor of "Iron Trail”, 1921- 22; editor of the Northwestern Railway System Magazine, 1922-24; and editor and owner of the "Railway Review", 1924-26. Following his retirement in 1926 he and his family moved to Laguna Beach, California, where he continued to interest himself in many enterprises and was associate editor of the South Coast News, Laguna Beach, Calif. 1930-31 & chairman of the Greater Orange County Committee (Calif.) in 1931. Page 638 In 1934 he began spending his winters in Florida where he was editor of the Venice Nokomis News, Venice, Fla. In 1938-39 and was active in newspaper work for Florida and also Wisconsin newspapers, making up the annual vacation issues of numerous newspapers in the tourist sections of the two states. Continued ill health forced him to limit his activities and from 1941 until his death on November 19, 1945 he was engaged in genealogical work at the home of his sons in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was organizer and president of the Descendents of First Families in America and Secretary of the John Crandall Society, the Thomas Nichols Society and the George Mount Society. He was Secretary-treasurer of the Western Railway Club,1920-27; Secretary of the Veteran's Association of the Chicago and North Western 1924-27 and author of numerous books including the Autocrat at the Lunch Table,1915; Carmen's Helper,1917; Locomotive Terminal Cost Data,1919; After Forty Years,1925; Railroading ad the Rails and Off,1927; Reveries of an Editor,1932 and Is This the Armgeddon?,1942. The John Crandall Society The first manual convention of the Descendents of First Families in America was hold at the Venice-Myakka Hotel in Venice, Florida on January 26, 27 and 28 in the year 1939. Among the members present was a group of descendents of Elder John Crandall who arrived in Boston about 1634 and settled In the Providence Plantation where he was associated with Roger Williams and became one of the leaders In the affairs of the Rhode Island colony. It was decided at a meeting of this group at the convention to organize a John Crandall Society for the purpose of compiling and preserving the records and genealogies of the descendents of Elder John Crandall. The Society was formed and elected as officers: John C. Crandall, New Woodstock, N.Y., President; Mary Elysabeth Crandall Venice, Fla., Secretary; as members of the executive committee: A.
