Horace J. Jackson
Horace J. Jackson, 68, of Jefferson, former owner of Jackson Funeral Home
for 33 years, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at BJC Medical Center,
Commerce, following a sudden illness.
Mr. Jackson was born November 15, 1934, in Jackson County, a son of the
late Claude I. and Allene Crowe Jackson.
He was a graduate of John A. Gupton Mortuary College, Nashville, Tenn.,
and was a licensed funeral director for 42 years. Mr. Jackson was a member
of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, where he served as a former
deacon and on numerous committees. He was a former board member of the
Jefferson City School Board of Education for over 12 years, where he
served as treasurer, and was instrumental in the building of the Jefferson
High School baseball field, which was dedicated in his honor in 1997.
Mr. Jackson was also a member of G.F.D.A. and N.F.D.A. and a member of the
Georgia National Guard in the Gainesville Post. He was past president of
the Jefferson Rotary Club, former board member of the Woodbine Cemetery
Association and former board member of the Jefferson Housing Authority.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, at the First
Baptist Church of Jefferson with the Revs. Cary Hilliard and Dennis Kesler
and Dr. Gerald Mitton officiating. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery,
Jefferson. Larry Boyd, Doug Farmer, Walter Lentz, Delone Muse, Donald
Smith, Gene Tanner and Christopher Wheaton served as pallbearers.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Raye Dean Jackson, Jefferson; one
son, Scott Jackson, Cartersville; one brother, Jerry Jackson, Chestnut
Mountain; and numerous nieces and nephews.
