This is a transcription of the book Record of Poor Children 1857 - 1862 Rabun County, the original of which can be found in the Probate Judge's office at the Rabun County courthouse in Clayton, GA. In spite of the name, only two years were recorded, those being 1857 and 1858. Still, this book is a useful tool for the local genealogist and historian for several different reasons, but primarily because all or most of the children between the ages of eight and sixteen (and in some cases, six to sixteen) who were living within the county at that time appear to have been listed.
There were no page numbers in the original book. The children's names began on the third page into the book, and so that's where the numbers used herein originated. Also, the capital letters I and J were indistinguishable in many cases, so the notation I/J was used unless the transcriber knew exactly which letter was meant. The year 1857 begins on page three and ends on page twenty-one; 1858 begins on page twenty-four and ends on page forty-six. In the last two districts for the year 1857 only (Tiger and Warwoman), the children were not listed individually as they were in other districts; instead, the head of household was given with the number of eligible children to the side.
Pages which aren't linked will be added at a later date. The index includes every person named in the book.
