1860 Slave Schedule
Jackson Co., NC

There are five pages to this schedule. Pages 1 and 5 are short pages, meaning that the enumerator used only part of these pages. This schedule is presented here in its entirety, and is as close as possible to the original.

Pages:
1 2 3 4 5

This schedule was enumerated by J. Ramsay Dills, Asst. Marshal, between June 1, 1860 and July 28, 1860. The page number and date of enumeration are at the top of each page, which is divided into two tables. The upper table is the information found on the left-hand side of that page, while the lower table is the information found on the right-hand side of that page.

Each page of this schedule had 40 lines. The right-hand side of the page did not have line numbers in the original schedule. For the sake of clarity, line numbers are used on this transcription for all entries.

Each column is numbered, except the far left column, which is used to show the line number. The remaining columns from left to right are:

  1. Name of Slave Owners
  2. Number of Slaves
  3. Age [of slave]
  4. Sex [of slave]
  5. Color [of slave]
  6. Fugitives from the State
  7. Number Manumitted
  8. Deaf & dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic
  9. No. of Slave houses

Unfortunately, the names of the individual slaves were not given. Additionally, under "color" can be found two letters: "b", for black, and "m", for mulatto.

At the bottom of each page are the totals. Many of the columns were left entirely blank by the enumerator and therefore did not have any totals.

At the end of the schedule, on the bottom of page five, was this short paragraph:

I certify that the forgoing returns schedule no. 2 was made
according to my oath & instriction [sic] to the best of my knowledge
and belief J. Ramsay Dills Asst. Marshal
Sworn to & subscribed before me Sept. 25th, 1860
                                  Allen Fisher

There was a little scribble at the end of Allen Fisher's name which could have been the initials "JP".

This census was transcribed from microfilm copies. Every effort has been made to insure that the transcription reflects a true and accurate copy of the original. Questions and comments may be directed to the transcriber.
