Historical Records Survey
Macon Co., NC

Between about 1938 and 1941, Horace J. Hurst visited most of the cemeteries in Macon County and compiled lists of the marked graves of people who died before 1913 or 1914, depending on the cemetery. Most people call these the WPA (Works Project Administration) surveys. There were other cemeteries listed on the working lists, but the ones below are the only ones for which an HRS exists. Links are to the record as Mr. Hurst made them unless otherwise specified. Other links may take you to a current survey, if one has been made.

If a current survey exists, please use the directions listed on it to find the cemetery, and not the directions Mr. Hurst gave. Many of the roads have changed in the interim years and his directions are, in many cases, no longer accurate. Also, the names of some cemeteries have changed, some cemeteries have been moved and integrated with others, and some cemeteries have been completely destroyed. Those changes will be noted as needed.

All current surveys which are online may be found here.
