Ramona Spur and Lariat Club


Father Paul Quinn came to Ramona to serve as pastor of St. Williams Catholic Church. His love of horses spread among the residents and it wasn't long before horses were a common sight on the city streets. Riders would hold games and races. He helped organize the "Spur and Lariat Club". He went to Redfield but returned to be the announcer at the second annual Ramona Horse Show in 1950. It was reported by the Madison Daily Leader that there were 2500 in attendance.

Club members were: Tony Casanova, president; Marieta Bresse, secretary/treasurer; William (Gramp) Bernstein, Sr; Earl Breese; Leonard Casanova; Jack Dooley; Joe Shannon; Harry Case; Orville Bloom; Roy Mathison; Lawrence Larson; Bill Casanova; Clayton Seid; Leo Casanova; Casper Rensch; Martin Cassanova; Alf Manthey; Jack Cassanova; Elmer Meyers; Jerry Henrichs; Vern Leonard; Mike Mooney; Steve Cajacob; Bill Bernstein; Sid Cavigelli; Walter Dooley; Harm Becker; Bud Rensch; Pete Jodozi; and families. For 25 years the club was quite active, holding 19 annual horse shows. The fifth annual horse show, August 22, 1953, featured the following events: Matched Pairs, Cigar Race, Pop Race, Flag Race, Bending Race (poles), Musical Chair, Tire Race, Relay Race, Dizzy Race, Balloon Race, Potato Race, Sack Race, Clover Leaf (barrels), Ribbon Race, and Horse Races. There were trained horses, a flag drill and a square dance. Club members also attended shows in Carthage, Artesian, Letcher, Madison, Howard, Canistota, Parker, Montrose, Lyons, Ward, Sioux Falls, Volga, Arlington, Badger, Lake Preston, DeSmet, Huron, Redfield, Hartford and Wentworth.
