I copied this diary as she wrote it. I’ve only added punctuation in places for clarity to the reader. I have question marks behind words I couldn’t read well enough to spell correctly. If anyone has information to share about persons mentioned in this diary please contact me.

I would like to thank Grandmother Hall for writing her diary. I would like to have known her. I would also like to give a big "thank you" to Mr. Thomas M. Burlingame who passed down the diary to me.

Happy New Year 1884

Ella, have Sent you a letter this evening hoping you are "well & happy". How many Sad hearts & homes there will be before another New Year rolls around. Have just begun writing in my New Diary. Mr. Hall bought me one to day for 65cts. Mrs. Shaw, Will Eason, wife & children ware here for dinner. Every thing pass off nicely but there is vacant places that can’t be filled by Strangers and what a pang of Sorrow I Sometimes feel when I think of being Sepperated from those I love above all others. Oh! dear Ella in after years when you Sit and read this little memorandum book you will know that I Spent many unhappy days. But in that better home beyond the river of death we Shall feel no Sorrow if we live as we ought to in this world. How Sweet to die and leave all cares behind us. Peaceful rest.
