The name of Henry Ward Beecher, the famous New England minister and reformer of the late 1800s, was in every newspaper in America during 1876. The Reverend Beecher was on trial for adultery that year and the newspapers spared no detail. Although Beecher was later acquitted, he apparently was commemorated by naming these huge pinnacles in his honor. An early map refers to "Beecher's Pillar."
