Burnt Ranch, Pennington county, South Dakota

Approximately 2 miles east of Sheridan Lake on old SD 40 is the old mining section of Burnt Ranch. This spot is described in detail in Lee Case's Guidebook to the Black Hills. It describes a miner, Norman McCully being murdered by a deserting soldier and robbed of his $3,000 in gold. The soldier was sent to prison and worked in the prison sawmill, where he was chided by a fellow prisoner about the murder. The irate soldier shoved his fellow prisoner into a buzz-saw and "parted his hair clear down to his belly-button". Needless to say, the soldier was then hanged from the rafters.
