Deadwood is a much-alive, historic community filled with ghosts of the past, and is a must stop for anyone exploring this part of the country.
It dates to 1876 when the first placer gold was discovered along Deadwood Creek. By the end of that summer, 25,000 miners had arrived in Deadwood Gulch, and the City of Deadwood was booming. Because of extreme isolation, the worst elements of the West arrived, and Deadwood rapidly grew into one of the wildest, wickedest mining towns in the West.
Deadwood is located on US 85, 10 miles south of I-90 at EXIT 17, at a point seven miles east of Spearfish.
