Girl Scouts Troop Adopts Cemetery

gs_logo

The UCCA is following the progress of Troop #626 since the adoption of Sallings Cemetery, located at the corner of Main Street and Luttrell Road in Maynardville, TN. In the fall, Rhonda Turner, leader of Union County Troop #626 along with several girls and their mothers helped clean the cemetery which was in serious need of cleaning. Along with the assistance of Robert Ellison, president of the UCCA and his wife, Ollie Ellison, they picked up trash, piled brush, and cut down

several small saplings. When the morning was over the cemetery looked much better and the girls all left with a feeling of accomplishment. This is a project that the Troop will continue to do 3 or 4 times a year. The UCCA is very proud that these young girls have taken on such a worthy project. We encourage any others who are interested in volunteering their time toward the preservation of cemeteries to do so.

UCHS Horace Maynard FFA Chapter
Community Service

John Fugate and the FFA crew from the Union County High School cleaned the Welch-Carroll Cemetery

On Saturday, May 18, 2002, students from the Horace Maynard FFA Chapter at Union County High School cleaned up the Welch-Carroll Cemetery as a community service project. This service was completed at the request of the Union County Cemetery Association. The service project included cleaning removing overgrown brush, resetting headstones, and trimming gravesites. We found that the cemetery had several very old graves. Some were dated in the late 1800's & quite a few had no inscriptions. There was a tombstone of a civil war veteran there also. We worked on this project for 3 hours and were pleased with the progress we had made. This project also helped us gain an appreciation of the heritage of Union County and how preserving that heritage can help future generations learn from their past. Project participants were Sidney Jessee, Justin Campbell, & their advisor John Fugate. We extend a special thanks to Mr. Robert Ellison of The Union County Cemetery Association for approaching us about this project and his valuable support of our efforts.
