Annual Certificates of Appreciation Presentation

The UCCA President, Robert Ellison presented Certificates of Appreciation on March 20, 2004. They were presented to Gill Jessee, Donna Rogers, Thomas Cooke, and Tractor Supply Co.- Jimmy Caps, Store Manager.

Gill Jessee:

This past year has been an exceptional year in regard to rain and weather. Grass, weeds, and brush have grown overtime. Through Mr. Jessee and the efforts of community service groups several cemeteries have been cleared. Mr. Jesse has devoted his personal time in order to make this project a success.

Donna Rogers:

The UCCA recognizes Mrs. Rogers for the donation of handmade afghans which have been used for the membership drive as well as raising money for the UCCA. She not only donated all the materials, but her talents, time, and energy to make the afghans.

Thomas Cooke:

The UCCA recognizes Thomas Cooke for the significant time and work contributed by him as Web-Editor of our Union County Cemeteries Association's Website.

Tractor Supply Co. TSC, Jimmy Clapp, Store Manager:

When an organization such as the UCCA is in its initial stage of development, it reaches out to the public in many ways. Our experience with Tractor Supply Co. has been if you have a question as to equipment, supplies, donations, etc., Jimmy Clapp, Manager of the Maynardville Hwy. Store has been very helpful.

The "Silent Contributors"

The UCCA sent out "Letters of Appreciation" to several individuals who have contributed in some way to promote the continued progress of the UCCA. These include some people who do not want any public recognition. The UCCA wants to thank these individuals and all others who have contributed there time, but are never recognized publicly.

Memorial Donations

Would you like to fund the future needs of our Union County cemeteries - or a cemetery in particular? If so, this can be done in one of the following ways:

1. Send the gift to the Union County Cemeteries Association
2. Send the gift to the Union County Cemeteries Association designated for a specific cemetery
3. If the cemetery is set up to receive such gifts, send the gift to the treasurer of the cemetery

Many times people would like to be honored or have a special occasion commemorated by a lasting gift. Contributions to a memorial fund can produce earnings, and therefore usable funds to maintain the graves of your loved ones for years to come. We urge everyone to honor the lasting memory of those who have helped us to be where we are in life by supporting the maintenance of our Union County cemeteries.

"Footprints: Union County Cemeteries"

The Cemetery Collection "Footprints: Union County Cemeteries" has been updated through 2000 with the aid of the Union County Cemeteries Association. Each cemetery in the county has been revisited and 129 were located since the 1991 publication. Each cemetery now has an address / or directions, plus a GPS (Global Position System) reading. Transcribed from stones were names, all dates, and any organization including military information. "Footprints, Union County Cemeteries" reflects a total of 331 cemeteries and 18,318 names. The cemetery collection is published by the Union County Historical Society, Inc., P.O. Box 95, Maynardville, TN 37807. The price is $45.00 + $5.00 S&H or may be purchased at the Roy Acuff Union County Museum and Library in Maynardville on Sundays 1:30 P.M. until 5:00 and Mondays and Tuesdays 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.

Fundraiser

A Chicken-Dumpling/Ham Supper fundraiser will be held Friday May 7, 2004 at Luttrell School (5 p.m. to 8 p.m.) Proceeds are to benefit Hubbs-Hickle Cemetery. Dollie Merritt and her helpers are in charge. The event is sponsored by the UCCA.

Drawing for Afghan or Knives

American flag afghan crocheted by Donna Rogers

Donna Rogers, UCCA member, has crocheted and donated several afghans to the Union County Cemeteries Association. One of these, a beautiful American Flag afghan, will be given to one of our members. Three knives will be given away, also. The drawings for these items will be at our annual meeting in May. To be eligible for the drawings your new or renewal membership application must be received by the morning of the meeting on May 15, 2004.

Projects Update

Stone Replacements: While visiting our cemeteries throughout the county, Union County Cemeteries Association members have noticed a lot of stones are becoming illegible, deteriorating, and in some cases identifiable graves are not marked. The UCCA has taken on a project of replacing a number of these stones, as it becomes possible to do so.

Spraying of Cemeteries: It has been determined that approximately twenty cemeteries would benefit from routine sprayings. The UCCA plans to purchase materials and have these cemeteries sprayed this year.

These two projects will do much toward the goal of preserving our Union County Cemeteries.

Photos of Missing Stones

In 1982 photos were made of three stones on graves of ones buried in the Rufus Miller Cemetery. John Mincy of Kansas City, Missouri recently sent these pictures to the UCCA. These stones are no longer found in the Rufus Miller Cemetery. The two pictured on the bottom are not recorded in FOOTPRINTS 2000.
