Thru
the eyes of The Union County Cemeteries Association
an exhibit was created in order to compliment the
Smithsonian Exhibit “Between Fences”. This exhibit
is on display upstairs at the Roy Acuff Union Museum
and Library, 3828 Maynardville Highway, Maynardville,
TN 37807.
Our
goal was to introduce different types of fencing
connected to cemeteries in various areas of our
county.
Invisible boundaries “Fences” known but not visible
to the eye and therefore cannot be displayed:
examples that you would recognize are- Maynardville,
Luttrell, Sharps Chapel, Chuck Swan, Washburn,
Luttrell, Loyston, Big Ridge, Plainview and
Braden-separate areas within the county.
We
have chosen to showcase unique representation of
cemetery fences located in some of the areas which
are mentioned above within Union County.
Upon
viewing our exhibit, not only will you see photo’s
with descriptions and general locations of cemetery
fencing of interest, projects of fencing completed
are shown which were undertaken from the efforts of
funds which have been obtained by volunteer efforts
of UCCA.
One
of the first fencing projects was the Welch-Carroll
Cemetery which The Union County High School- Horace
Maynard FFA Chapter had cleaned and fenced with the
UCCA. Cemeteries that have been authorized to be
fence are also listed.
Genealogy research and history of Union County will
continue thru the preservation and documentation of
our local cemeteries for future generations.
Participation in “Between Fences” is a welcome
opportunity for the Cemeteries Association to
educate students and the public by teaching them
thru cemeteries their rich heritage. When respect
for ancestors is taught, the knowledge that is
passed will stress the need to continue to preserve
their resting places for generations who will follow
to continually learn from them.
Not
only has the UCCA Committee Chairperson, Ellen
Perry, assembled a Poster Display of “Fences”, but
several books of photos and other information
compiled over several years by B. Leon Graves,
President will be on hand for those interested to
look at. Several items that are for sale are also on
hand.
A
laptop will be available for viewing of cemeteries.
Have
you noticed the railing “fence” enclosing the
balcony within the Museum & Library?
The
UCCA is pleased to support our Community and present
a display for the Smithsonian “Between Fences”
