The Cemetery
Collection; "Footprints: Union County Cemeteries", has been updated with
the aid of The Union County Cemeteries Association. Each cemetery in the
county has been revisited and 129 were located since the 1991
publication. Each cemetery now has an address and/or directions, plus a
GPS (Global Position System) reading. Transcribed from stones were
names, all dates, and any organization including military information.
"Footprints, Union County Cemeteries"
reflects a total of 331 cemeteries and 18,318 names. The cemetery
collection is published by the Union County Historical Society, Inc.,
P.O. Box 95, Maynardville, TN 37807. The price is $45.00 + $5.00 S&H or
may be purchased at the Roy Acuff Union County Museum and Library in
Maynardville on Sundays 1:30 P.M. until 5:00 and Mondays and Tuesdays
10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. |

“FOOTPRINTS ADDENDUM” |
|
2000
EDITION |
|
ADDITIONS &
CORRECTIONS |
|
April 2005 |
|
This is
a listing of changes to the 2000 edition of footprints. The
changes will include spelling corrections, new markers for
previously unmarked grave sites or grave sites that had only
been marked with a fieldstone, stones that have been
repaired, stones that have been reset, stones that have been
cleaned, stones that have been found during the cleaning of
a cemetery, and added markers to a grave site that has been
marked but due to weathering and age the older stone became
to hard to read. Some of these unmarked graves, and graves
that had been marked with only a fieldstone may have been
included in the 2000 edition of “Footprints”. Many of the
unmarked graves were those that were moved by the Tennessee
Valley Authority in the 1930’s. The burial sites for the
unmarked graves were known to us from plate surveys and
field notes done by TVA at that time and which we have
obtained copies. Also from TVA records we have included
some known graves that were not moved and still reside Union
County but are under the waters of Norris Lake. This list
will be an ongoing feature of the Union County Cemeteries
Association web site at,
www.usgennet.org/usa/tn/county/union2/,
and any future additions or corrections that are added to it
and will be earmarked. These and any other changes will also
be published in the Union County Historical Society
quarterly “Pathways” for those who do not have internet
access. |

ANNA IRWIN CEMETERY TVA
#32
Not previously listed,
located under the waters of Norris Lake
In the 1930’s during the building of
Norris Dam, grave removal personal are said to have made a determined
effort to locate all graves which were to be inundated by the waters of
the new Norris Lake. It is more that likely that a number of graves
were never found or removed. But what it is known, that in several
cases some people chose to leave their relatives graves undisturbed.
TVA has stated that twenty-two (22) graves reportedly were not removed,
and records for seventeen (17) of these were found for the Anna Irwin
Cemetery. TVA plat survey NR#932 for the property were the cemetery was
located, indicates that the highest grave in this cemetery would have
been at the 1020 foot elevation, which means that when the waters of the
lake were at their highest level the cemetery would be totally covered.
This cemetery was located about two miles southwest of Loyston in Union
County and about one mile from the Anderson County line. The following
is the list of those graves left in this cemetery and who authorized TVA
to leave this grave and the person’s relationship to the deceased. None
of these names were listed in the 2000 edition of “Footprints”.
