The Potts-Martin-Wallace House

Photos by Bonita Bratcher Mangrum

The Saturday, June 16, 2007 Plainview Tour organized by President Rachel Scott Reno Hillis was a delightful and informative trip. The viewing of the Potts-Martin-Collier-Wallace home was a real treat.
It was originally built as a log cabin possibly of the dogtrot type of cabin of the times by a Mr. Potts who also gave his name to a spring not far from the house. It was eventually purchased by George Washington Martin, son of William “Rock” Martin and his wife Virginia “Jennie” Bradford.
George was married twice, first to Sarah Gwynn in 1836 and after her death to Henrietta Hill in 1852. G.W. Martin’s descendants where part of the William “Rock” Martin Descendants in the 2003, Volume XII, Numbers 3 and 4, Fall and Winter.
Charles Morgan Collier and his wife, Martha Josephine “Josie” Douglas, were the next owners.
From them possession came to Powell Malone Wallace and his Miss Ella.
It was courtesy of their children and spouses that we were given a tour of the home.

Bedroom
The two upstairs bedrooms reveal how high the original log cabin was.
In most log cabin homes the second floor was merely an attic or sleeping loft.

Fireplace mirror

The mirror above the fireplace is a traveler. The George W. Martin family installed it. After Mr. Martin’s death and his wife’s death, the place was sold, either Thomas Jefferson Martin or Ben Hill Martin took it to Texas. After Charles Morgan Collier bought the house and moved in, his wife, Josie Douglas Collier realized the mirror had been taken and demanded it be brought back to the house. Legally, she was within her rights and the mirror did come back to rest in the home over the mantle.
