The envelope is dated May 20, 1937, McMinnville, Tennessee and is addressed to Mrs. Guy Moore (Myrtle Lee Dunlap), Box 352, Williamsburg, Kentucky. The return address on the back of the envelope has Mrs. Lester Fisher (Margaret "Maggie" Lee Gibson), Route 5, McMinnville, Tenn. Dearest Myrtle,
Received your letter today. Glad to hear from you. I don’t ever write to anyone. I have been so busy. Well, Myrtle, I don’t know if the Dr. Moss is related to our family or not but I will try to give you all the information I can.
Papa’s father’s name was Enoch Gibson. He had one son named Alexander Gibson, one named John G. Gibson, and one named Charles W. Gibson. That’s all the boys. (The daughters were) Mary E. Gibson, Catherine V. Gibson, Caroline M. Gibson, and Columbia A. Gibson. These are the births in the old Gibson Family Bible.
My grandfather Gibson was married twice. He married Miss Elizabeth Jackson the first time. She was the daughter of John Jackson. John Jackson was a brother to Stonewall Jackson, a General in the Confederate Army. The names I have given you are the names of their children. His first wife died. He then married Miss Margaret S. McCleon and Papa was the only child living. Papa’s full name was Ovid Tupper. He has a brother who died named Enock Tullas. Grandpa Gibson never had any boys to serve in the Civil War. Alexander and John G. both died before the Civil War broke out.
George (Gibson) gets his name from Mother’s side. Papa’s half-brother, Charlie W. Gibson, was living the last time Papa ever heard of him. This Columbia Gibson married George Cozad. She has two girls, Sue and Minnie. I have heard Grandma talk about them. I believe they were all the children she had. There might have been another one, I just don’t remember. One of the other girls married a Lawhorn and they had one child, a boy named James C. Lawhorn. His father was killed in the Civil War and his mother died. Grandpa Gibson raised him. One other the girls married a Russ or Rust, I just don’t remember which. That’s all I know about the girls. Grandpa Gibson lived in Buchanon, a town in Upshur County, West Virginia. That’s where they came from when they came to Tennessee. They drive through in a four-horse wagon; they were six weeks on the road. The old Gibson home was one mile from Buchanon, West Virginia. If Grandpa Gibson had a sister I never heard of her. Seems like he just had one brother. You know, the Gibson family is just about wiped off the map. You Great-grandpa Gibson’s name was Enoch Gibson. Well, this is about all I know about the Gibsons. I hope you can find out something about the Gibson family. I have given you all the names from Enoch Gibson’s Family Bible. So if his wife has made a life study of the Gibson Family maybe you will find out something about our people. I hope so. Anyway, if we are related (to Dr. Moss) she will have some of these names. I sure would like to find out something about our Grandma Gibson’s people. I wish you had known her. She was a McCleon. Where you were in E. Virginia was where she was raised and I feel that was her old home place.
Well, it’s about 10 o’clock and I am real tired. You asked me about Inez. She is in bed and I am sure from what I can find out she won’t ever be up. She’s at her mothers. I think Lee (Fisher) and their house fell out. Lee stays at home most all the time. I think Burk’s house fell out with Smith’s, too. I would like to hear Guy Elmus (Myrtle’s oldest son) sing.
Well, Myrtle, I will try to write you again before you leave. Are you going to live in N.C. (North Carolina)? You must write me and I will promise to do better than I have about writing. I know I ought to and think I will be just put if off from time to time.
I liked Wilson’s wife. I think she’s a fine girl. They had such a cute baby. I have not heard from Delbert (Gibson) since Xmas. Well, it’s getting where I can’t see, so good night and love to all.
As ever,Aunt Lee
