The Guilford Mennonite Group of Medina County was established in 1829,
by members from Maryland, Ontario, and the Pennsylvania counties of
Bucks, Lancaster, and Lehigh. Soon after they settled, the group
constructed the Guilford meetinghouse west of Blake. Early leaders
included Jacob Koppes, William Overholt, and Martin Leatherman. Bishop,
Abraham Rohrer led this group during the middle and later part of 19th
century. His members followed him into the Wisler branch in 1872,
leaving a bare half-dozen members in the Ohio Conference. Rev. Isaac
Good served as pastor of this group for thirty-seven years. After a
severe struggle for survival, aided by John F. Funk and others, the
congregation began to grow, and the beautiful Bethel Mennonite edifice
was constructed. The Wesleyan Methodists held mission services in the
old edifice west Blake for some time. The church was sold and removed
prior to 1948, but the cemetery remains well kept.
