The
basketball season of 1921 was without doubt
the most successful in the history of the
school. With three of last year's regulars
and plenty of other good material Coach Novak
developed a team which won 20 out of 21 games
and then journeyed to Chicago to win the Chicago
University Tournament, and the championship
of the country. Cedar Rapids has always had
a strong basketball team, but this is the
greatest glory a local team has ever brought
to its school. Coach Novak did not enter his
team in the state tournaments because the
dates of the Ames and Chicago tourneys was
the same and the Tigers had already defeated
the strongest teams of the state.
The season started December
31 when the Alumni were defeated 29 to 14.
In three easy games Anamosa, Keokuk, and Williamsburg
were defeated. In the next game of the season
C.R.H.S. routed Lane Technical of Chicago
by a 34 to 10 score. springville was easily
taken into camp. On January 22, East Waterloo
broke our winning streak for our only defeat
of the season. In this game the Tigers couldn't
overcome their opponents' lead and lost 22
to 19. After two victories over Marion and
Annamosa, Cedar Rapids won over the Omaha
Commercial team 21 to 15. Marion was again
defeated and Mason City fell before the Tigers
on February 4. Boone, which won the Ames tournament
last year, was defeated by the score of 30
to 17. Then followed five victories over West
Waterloo, Springville, St. Ambrose, Spirit
Lake, and Cedar Falls. On February 26 the
Tigers journeyed to East Waterloo. Waterloo
had beaten Cedra Rapids, but the Tigers felt
taht the score did not tell the correct story
of the game. Supported by many rooters, C.R.H.S.
defeated East Waterloo by the topheavy score
of 28 to 12. After an easy defeat of Marshalltown
Cedar Rapids defeated Boone in the season's
fastest game by the score of 23 to 21. This
game was hard fought and at the end of the
last half the score was a tie. This necessitated
an extra period in which C.R.H.S. beat down
the winning points. Lter Boone won the Ames
Tournament for the second straight time. At
the end of the season the Tigers had piled
up 717 points to their opponents 313.
THE
CHICAGO TOURNAMENT IN BASKETBALL
Not
content with the brilliant record of winning
every game but one, Cedar Rapids High won
the Chicago University Basketball Tournament,
March 10, 11, 12. The winner of this is the
acknowledged interscholastic champion of the
country, and when Cedar Rapids defeated West
Lafayette, Indiana, 43 to 19 in the final
game, they became the National Basketball
Champions! This is the greatest honor a team
can win in basketball.
The Tigers played their first
game on Friday afternoon, March 11, against
Fifth Avenue High School of Pittsburg. Our
team won this game by the close score of 27
to 25. Then meeting Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania
the following evening the Tigers won the game
by the score of 44 to 11. Our closest game
was played with Crosby High School of Waterbury,
Connecticut, on Saturday afternoon. This game
was a thriller from the start and the first
half ended 13 to 13. Cedar Rapids came back
and piled up a lead of seven points with but
two minutes to play, when a Crosby sub-forward
shot three baskets. Fortunately the whistle
blew before any more damage could be done.
In the final game the Tigers had a rather
easy time, and all ten men were given a chance
to play. In this game Cedar Rapids was never
in any danger.
Coach Novak and the team returned
home with handsome trophies in addition to
the National Championship. Coach Walker of
the University of Chicago team presented each
of our ten men with an Elgin gold watch. A
beautiful silver loving cup was given to the
team collectively. There was no all-tournament
team picked, but if there had been, it isnot
an idle boast that Cedar Rapids would have
been well represented.
The
following is the list of the men who were

FORECAST
With
Hines and Barta, two of this year's stars
back in school next year, there is no reason
why Cedar Rapids should not be represented
by another winning team in 1922. In accordance
with the custom the basketball captain for
1922 will be selected this spring.
Probably the hardest positionon
the team to fill will be that left vacant
by Heine Jensen. Hines will probably be shifted
from forward to center. Yeisley, Chehak and
Griffith are other possibilites.
Although Yerkes and Swenson
will not be back, Crawford has proved himself
capable of holding down one forward. Should
Hines be moved to center, Marek wouldmake
a strong bid for the other forward. Danziger
is another possibility.
Another hard place to fill will
be that of Captain Barnes, the other man who
will not return next year. The best prospects
for his running guard position are Carey,
Clark and Young. Tait and Burkholder will
be back and are likely to develop into good
men by next winter.
