TRACK

Cedar Rapids established a wonderful record on the track in 1920. With good material Coach Novak developed a team which won four meets and placed second in another.
The first meet to be won was The Drake Relay Carnival at Des Moines, April 24. In the two mile relay Harrison Barnes, Harold Jensen, Donald Yeisley, and Donald Hines won and reduced the record by one second, making it 8:33 4-5. Kirk Yerkes, Harrison Barnes, Donald Hines, and Hoyer Jenson won the Medley race in 6:51 3-5, thereby reducing the record from 6:56. These ten points were enough to give C.R. first place in the meet.
The next meet for the Tigers was the Penn Relays at Philadelphia. Here the Tigers competed against the best athletes in the country and succeeded in capturing fourth place in the one mile relay.
A week later the Interscholastic meet was held at Iowa City. Cedar Rapids rang up a total of 24 1-2 points and took the meet. West Waterloo was second with 21 points and East Des Moines third with 20. Here Hoyer Jensen won first in the mile run, while Barnes and Heinie Jensen each won first in the two heats of the half-mile run. Boegel won fourth in the 220 yard dash, Harold Hensen fourth in the 440 dash, and Swenson tied for second in high jump. Cedar Rapids also won the one mile relay.
Cedar Rapids also won the mile relay, reducing the record from 3:42 to 3:34 1-5.
In the State Meet at Des Moines Cedar Rapids placed second, pushing the winner Sioux City hard. In the mile run Hoyer Jensen won first with Hines third. Barnes won first in the half-mile and Harold Jensen won second. Due to their former hard runs the Cedar Rapids team only placed fourth in the one mile relay.
Cedar Rapids won 3 of the five relays at Northwestern relay meet at Evanston, Illinois. They won the one mile relay in 3.39, the two mile in

THE MINOR SPORTS

Besides football, basketball, and track, Cedar Rapids has threeminor sports, wrestling, swimming, and tennis. Two of these, wrestling and swimming are new to us. To win a a monogram a boy has to win a first in an event at one of the meets. The monograms to be given are similar to the basketball monograms except for a small "w", "s", or "t" placed under the C.R.

WRESTLING

Coach Novak          Coach Peterson

In the first wrestling tournament ever held for high schools, Cedar Rapids took firsts in four out of the seven classes, thereby winning the meet by a large margin. This carnival was held at Ames, February 5, and with the winning of it goes the state championship. This is the first year that wrestling has been a high school sport and judging from its success Cedar Rapids will probably be represented every year. About forty boys tried out for the team. Ray Peasley was appointed captain but he was unable to go to Ames because of sickness. Glenn Burkholder was acting captain at the Ames meet, while Peasley's place in the 135 poound class was taken by Joseph Guinta. Cedar Rapids should have a record breaking team next year because only one man is lost by graduation. Much praise is due Archie Peterson who coached the wrestlers. The team is as follows:
Cook, 95 pounds, fourth place; Evans, 115 pounds, did not place—sick; Dice, 124 pounds, did not place—sick; Guinta, 135 pounds, first place; George Carringer 145 pounds, first place; Burkholder, 158 pounds, first place.
Harry Carringer, who weighed 147 pounds, wrestled in the 175 pound class and won first place. Walter Berger, wrestling in the heavyweight class took third place. He wrestled a man weighing 240 pounds.

Like wrestling, swimming is a new sport at C.R.H.S. but despite this twenty boys were out to try for the team which was under coach Peterson. Though there was little chance for a championship team in the past season, Cedar Rapids will undoubtedly have a fast swimming aggregation next year because most of the team will return to school, and the experience gained this year will stand them in good stead. John Griffith was appointed captain of the swimmers.
At the Ames swimming meet, February 5, Cedar Rapids took fourth, winning nine points. West Des Moines won this meet.
At this meet the point winners were: Carey, second n 80 yard breast stroke; McDonald, third in 100 yard swim; Weise third in diving.
The relay team took fourth, making two points. Ted Swenson won the back stroke, but was disqualified.
At the Iowa City meet, March 11 and 12, Cedar Rapids took third with 10 points. West Des Moines won the meet with 56 points. In this meet Carey won the breast stroke, setting a new record, and Joseph Rozen won the plunge for distance. He plunged 55 feet, breaking the state record by eleven feet.

TENNIS

Swenson
Van Metre
Kohl
Mitchll

This is the first year Cedar Rapids has had a tennis team. There has always been a tennis tournament in the fall but a team has never been chosen. After the team was picked last fall, Coach Novak challenged every high school in the state but no games were obtained.
The regular high school tournament was held early in September and Gerald Kohl came out as winner when he defeated Van Metre, who took second place. For third place on the team Paul Mitchell defeated Tabor. The other member on the team was Ted Swenson who did not enter the tournament, as his place on the team was sure. Swenson is captain and is also city tennis champion.
The only match of the tennis team was that with Vannoy 6-1; 6-3; Van Metre defeated Burke 6-2; 6-4; Kohl defeated Young 6-4; 6-0.
In the doubles Swenson and Van Metre defeated Hoyt and Young 6-1; 6-3; Kohl and Mitchell defeated Burke and Vannoy 6-2; 6-4.
On Friday, May 12, there will be a tennis meet held at Ames which is the first one Cedar Rapids High players and Captain Swenson an dhis followers are likely to bring home new honors for C.R.H.S.
