ORCHESTRA

Alice C. InskeepTo Miss Inskeep we owe the success of our music department. It is she who influenced Mr. Doetzel to stay with us. Through her influence the business men's clubs backed our band and orchestra and enabled us to get funds for instruments and uniforms with which to equip these organizations. And it is through her efforts that we frequently enjoy heraring soloists at our assemblies. Miss Inskeep is not only the head of the music department in the high schools but she supervises the work in music in the grade schools as well. No one can speak about music in the schools of Cedar Rapids without commending Miss Inskeep's work.

Washington High is very proud of its orchestra and band conductor. We are fortunate in having at the head of these organizations a man of such marked ability and training. Mr. Doetzel is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music of London. He has held many important positions as musical director of opera companies and theatres in both England and Canada. After serving four years with the Canadian army in Europe he came to Cedar Rapids as leader of the Vimy Ridge Orchestra, under the auspices of the Canadian government. We hope he will make his permanent home with us.

As the director of musical activities in Washington High, Miss Barker has endeared herself to the student body. Besides being a musician of exceptional worth and the possessor of a beautiful vocie, she brings into the school such a splendid atmosphere of co-operation and good fellowship that she is an invaluable asset. She has numerous classes in voice work, directs the Boys' Glee Club the "Mixed" Glee Club, the Cecilians, and the work of musical appreciation.

Miss Bartlett, instructor of the harmony classes in Washington High and of music in Van Buren Junior High, is a graduate of the Eau Claire State Normal School and has studied at Oberlin and the Northwestern University. The harmony students are doing more than acceptable work and we hope the public will be given an opportunity to hear the compositions of some of our future Bethovens and Mozarts. Besides getting admirable results from her work, Miss Bartlett enjoys an eviable popularity among her pupils.

"A band in Cedar Rapids that will vie with any similar organization in the state and a symphony orchestra that will some day put the city on the map musically in a way never before done, are in the making in the city schools. The sound of horns, the shrill piping of piccolo and flute and clarinet, the whining sound of the saxophone, the shrill yet soothing sound of the violins, deepened by the tones of the bass viols and the rattle and thump of the drums are all blended under the masterful direction of Maj Frederick Doetzel into two harmonious organizations.
One is surprised on stepping into the high school auditorium at rehearsal periods, for had one not heard either of these organizations before, as surprise is in store. Screeches, discords and the other commitant necessary nuisances of band and orchestra training are noticeable for their absence. The band and orchestra are by no means, small town organizations either in size or calibre of production.
The organization of the two units has been well worked out, and membership is of those who are earnest in their musical desires, with the result that the tum-te-tum of the drums will prove, not "drums of jeopardy" in the reputation of Cedar Rapids, but rather the trumpet of hope and of efforts well done, to add more, to the musical talent of the city as well as accomplishment of the individuals.—Evening Gazette

Both the band and orchestra have appeared before the student body in a number of concerts. By hearty applause the students have shown how well they appreciate the work of these two organizations.
