WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA

Abbie S. Abbott

Principal Washington HS

J. J. McConnell, LL. D

Superintendent

The class of '21 is the last to graduate under the leadership of Miss Abbott, who for many years has been the principal of the Cedar Rapids High School. Indeed there is seldome recorded such a long and successful term of office as the one which Miss Abbott is now ending. When she came to Cedar Rapids in 1886, Miss Abbott found a small high school of no particular achievements. Throughout her years here she has constantly developed and improved C. R. H. S. until now we are known throughout the west as one of the best high schools in the country. Any student or former student of C. R. H. S. would testify as to her insight, ability, and unfailing fairness. Miss Abbott will remain an inspiring example in thememory of those whom she has directed in Cedar Rapids High School.

The class of '21 voices for the High School and for all schools in Cedar Rapids the appreciation of the effective leadership of Superintendent McConnell during his work in this city. When he retires next fall, students will feel keenly the absence of the kindly support which he has always accorded to the better and more elevating activities of high school life. For twenty years Mr. McConnell has been the superintendent of the schools of Cedar Rapids, and in that time he has established through constant and untiring effort, a school system of which the city may be proud.

IN OUR TEACHERS

You may not dream as we are wont to do

Of Fame and wealth, and of the wondrous land

Of El Dorado gleaming near the ocean's blue;

But ever as we strive a greater height to view,

You lend to us a guiding, helping hand.
