At the age of twelve years he removed with his parents to New York City, where he attended the public schools until fifteen years of age, when he entered the machinists' trade as an apprentice. He advanced rapidly and ina few years became engineer on the
Page 708 steamboat, "William Young," plying the Hudson between New York, and Chelsea, then known as Low Point. After three years he was offered a place as engineer on a steamboat of a sugar refining company located at what is known as Washington Heights, from which position he entered the employ of the Manhattan Iron Works in New York City, as master machinist of their entire plant. In November, 1861, he joined the New York police force, but remained only a short time, for with the outbreak of the Civil War he felt it his duty to offer his services to his country. Being a reliable engineer of the gunboat "Mercedita," he saw much active fighting during the war, and in one of the engagements his ship took an active part. The concussion from the funs caused a slight affection to his hearing; at another time he assisted in the capture of a ship whose cargo of sea island cotton was estimated to be worth over one million dollars. For this he received recognition from the government. In 1864 he returned to New York City and again entered the police department, being one of the mounted force and connected with the thirty-second precinct. He was active in the drafting riot at the thirty-second precinct armory, one of the principal events of New York City during the War. While making his way as a policeman, into the thickest of the fight, a woman caught him by the throat and inflicted wounds in his neck which he carried through the remainder of his life. A few years later he returned to the Manhattan Iron Company and after serving in all eleven years as an employee received an appointment to the New York Fire Department as engineer and foreman, and served the city in that capacity for twenty years, when he retired. He then served as engineer in the Mutual Life Insurance Company's building, remaining as such for twenty years, at the end of which term he was retired by the company on half pay for the remainder of his life; an act that the company had up to that time, done for no other employee, and which was a fitting mark of appreciation of his reliability and efficiency. The remainder of his life was passed at his home off North Avenue, in Peekskill, New York. He was from 1860 an enthusiastic member of Harlem Lodge, No. 457, Free and Accepted Masons, New York City, and assisted in instituting many new lodges in New York and vicinity. For many years he was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He married, in 1852, Mary E., daughter of Joseph H. and Eliza J. (Russell) Canniff, of New York. Her grandfather, Joseph H. Canniff, came from Ireland. He was a Quaker and a man of means. He married Mary Davis, of Westchester County, New York. They had fifteen children, among them was Joseph H., Jr., referred to above.
