He had a common school education and taught school at Cole's Mills, Putnam County, New York. He married, May 13, 1832, Rachel, daughter of Jesse and Mary (Organ) Cole, who was born at Kent, Putnam County, New York, January 13, 1813, and died May 1, 1883. Her father was born in Virginia, about 1761, died at Kent, October 5, 1818. At the age of sixteen he enlisted in the Second Regiment Westchester County Militia, and served throughout the Revolution; after the war he came to Kent, where he was a farmer. Russell. All the above children were born at Kent. WARE. Robert Ware, the founder of this family, died in Dedham, Massachusetts, April 19, 1699. He was then called "Robert Ware the Aged." The first record we have of him, however, is in November, 1642, when he was "admitted to purchase" of a house lot and three acres of land, as stated in the Dedham records. Various other grants of land were made to him in the same town, and his name stood second in point of wealth on the tax list. He joined the church in October, 1646, at the time of the baptism of his oldest child. In 1644 he was a member of the Artillery Company, and he was made a freeman, May 26, 1647. (VI) Horatio Gates, son of Melatiah (20 and Susan Dix (Fox) Ware, was born in Wilmington, Vermont, December 19, 1811, died in Newark, new Jersey, in July, 1890. He went first to New York City, where he was engaged in the dry goods business. He was made cashier for the firm of Loder & Lockwood, with which he was connected for thirty years or more. The last year of his life was spent in Newark. He was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church, an elder in the old Broome Street Church in New York City. He married Caroline Genin, who died at Peekskill, New York, January 26, 1911, aged eighty-six years. Children: 1. Henry M., died in infancy. 2. Mary J., died at seventeen. 3. Edward, died in infancy. 4. Horace, died in infancy. 5. Harriet F., of whom further. 6. Walter, died in infancy. (VII) Harriet G., daughter of Horatio Gates and Caroline (Genin) Ware, was born in Brooklyn, New York. She was educated in private schools of Newark. Her home is now in Peekskill, New York. On January 11, 1912, she married Stephen Lent, of Peekskill, New York, an attorney of that city.
CLINTON. James B. Clinton, the first member of this family of whom we have definite information, was born in Warwick, Orange County, New York, January 23, 1795. In 1842 he settled in Peekskill,. Westchester County, New York. He married Mary Ann Lockyer, of Patterson, New York. Children: 1. Morris E., born December 14, 1816. 2. Benjamin, born January 19, 1819. 3. (II) William H., son of James B. and Mary Ann (Lockyer) Clinton, was born in Patterson, New York, July 27, 1839. He received his education in the Peekskill public schools, and after leaving school went into business in Peekskill. Afterwards he finally engaged in the lumber business. For a number of year he was assistant postmaster at Peekskill. About 1897, in company with his son, William H. Jr., he engaged in the drug business, but later Page 437 the son assumed full control of the business, which he continues at the present time, located at the corner of Division and Park Streets. At the time of his death in June, 1904, he was engaged in the real estate business. He was for several years superintendent of the city water works, and served also as assistant engineer of the Peekskill fire department. He was a Democrat in politics and served as town assessor for ten years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, of Peekskill. He married Eliza, daughter of henry Denike, of Peekskill, who survives him and is now living in Peekskill. Children: Helen, born August 15, 1865, deceased. 2. (IV) Edmund Cornelius, son of William Bryer Nation, was born in Birmingham, England, May 9, 1845. He came to this country in May, 1857, and resided with his father in Pennsylvania until he was eighteen years old. He attended the public schools and studied chemistry at Easton, Pennsylvania, under the instruction of Professor Page 438 Taylor. He engaged in the manufacture of chemicals at Highland Station, New York, then North Weymouth, Massachusetts, and afterwards at Passaic, New Jersey. Returning to Highland Station, New Jersey, manufacturer of chemicals on his own account until he sold his business in 1899 to the General Chemical Company. From that time until he retired in 1910 he was manager of the business of which he had formerly been the owner, since 1882 he has made his home in Peekskill, New York. Mr. Nation stands high in the business world and is among the best known and most respected citizens of the town and county. He is president of the Hudson River Foundry Company of Poughkeepsie, New York. In politics he is a Republican. He is a prominent Free Mason, having taken all the York Rite degrees in Masonry. He is a member of Cortlandt Lodge, No. 34; of Mohegan Chapter, No. 221, Royal Arch Masons, of Peekskill; of Peekskill Council, No. 55, Royal and Select Masters; of Westchester Commandery, No. 42, Knights Templar; if Mecca Temple, Mystic Shrine, of New York City. He has held various offices in these Masonic organizations, and has held the highest office in the Chapter, Council and Commandery. He married, April 24, 1872, Ella E. Livingston, of new York, born June 27, 1848, daughter of John Blakeley and Matilda (Little) Livingston. Her father was a native of Scotland. Her parents had six children: 1. Robert Blakeley. 2. Rachel Jane Matilda, living in Cold Spring, Stratford, Connecticut. 3. Almina, married Charles Bullock Dalzell. 4. William Joseph. 5. Ella E. 5. Clarence Livingston, of Copper Hill, Tennessee; all born in the state of New York. NOSTRAND. Hans Hansen or Jansen from Noordstraat or Noorstrandt in Holstein or Noordstraat in Zealand, the founder of this family, emigrated to new Netherlands in 1639 and settled at New Lots, Flatbush, Long Island. His will is dated August 20, 1679. October 18, 1690, Gerrit Hansen and Jan Jansen, two of his sons, were required to show cause for selling the estate of their father, deceased, without administrating thereon. Grace A., born April 28, 1873, died September 15, 1873. (IX) Benjamin B. (2), son of Benjamin B (1), and Mary Catharine (Sands) Nostrand, was born at Sands point, Long Island, August 26, 1854. He received his early education in the Flushing Institute, and in private schools and graduated from Lehigh University, South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with the degree of mechanical engineer in 1878. For the next eighteen years he was employed as electrical engineer by the United States Electric Lighting Company and later by the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1892 he purchased the Peekskill Light and Power Company, which he developed, and in 1899, in conjunction with Sanderson & Porter, built the Peekskill Electric Railroad under the name of the Peekskill Traction Company. Later these two companies were consolidated and they in time purchased the Peekskill Gas Light Company, forming the Peekskill Lighting and Railroad Company, Mr. Nostrand becoming president and general manager of the concern, from which position he retired in 1906, when he gave up an active business life. He is an independent Republican in politics. He is a member of Peekskill Lodge, No. 741, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; an associate member of the Cortlandt Hook and Ladder Company, president of the Peekskill Automobile Club, third vice-president of the New York State Automobile Association, honorary member of the Street Railway Association of the State of New York, and was first vice-president of this last named association in 1905. He married, September 19, 1883, Ella L. Wolle, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Child, Ray Sans, born December 9, 1894. (The Sands Line.) (I0 James Sands, the founder of this family, was born in England, in 1622, died on Block Island, March 13, 1695. According to Page 440 tradition, he emigrated to America from Reading, Berkshire, landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, and in 1642 engaged in building a house for Mrs. Hutchinson, at East Chester, Westchester County, New York. He then removed to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where he received a grant of land, October 5, 1643, and August 29, 1644. In 1655 he was a freeman in Portsmouth, and May 19, 1657, commissioner from Portsmouth to the general court. In April, 1661, he and his family sailed from Taunton, Massachusetts, for Block Island, on which they settled. In 1665 he was deputy from Block Island, and in October, 1670, and September, 1671, taxrater. He married in 1645 or 1646, Sarah, daughter of John and Catharine (Hutchinson) Walker, of Boston and Block Island. Children: 1. John, of whom further. 2. Edward. 3. Samuel, born about 1656, died in 1730; married, in 1670 ---------- Sands, sister of his brother John's wife. 4. Sarah, married Nathaniel Niles. 5. James, born about 1662, died in 1731; married, in 1697, Mary Cornell. 6. Mercy, married April 29, 1683, Joshua Raymonds (II) John, son of James and Sarah (Walker) Sands, was born before 1649, died on the "Home Farm," Cow Neck, Long Island, March 15, 1712, buried at Sands Points, Long Island. On May 27, 1674, he received a grant of land in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and in 1678-80-81, he was deputy to the general assembly from Block Island. In 1691 he removed from Block Island to Cow Neck, where he purchased a farm from Richard Cornell, of Rockaway. The old homestead was erected in the seventeenth century, is in a good state of preservation, and is still owned by the Sands family and was occupied by the family until a few years ago. He married, on block Island, Sybil, born March 10, 1665, died December 23, 1733, daughter of Simon (2) and Mary (Thomas) Ray, of Block Island. Her sister Mary married an Englishman and was the first American woman presented to the King. Children: 1. (III) Edward, son of John and Sybil (Ray) Sands, was born in 1691, died on Cow Neck, Long Island, March 9, 1746. He married Mary, born December 17, 1703, died September 15, 1762, daughter of Richard and Hannah (Thorne) Cornell, of Mamaroneck. Children: 1. Ray, died February 14, 1739. 2. Henry, born in 1728, died July 1, 1780; married March 14, 1748, Martha Cornell. 3. Richard, of whom further. 4. George, married, March 6, 1757, Jemima Smith. 5. Sybil, born September 3, 1727, died March 1, 1759; married, July 27, 1746, Stephen Thorne. 6. Hannah, married November 30, 1771, Dr. David Brooks. 7. Mary, born in 1733, died July 28, 1793; married, April 18, 1779, William Sutton. 8. Deborah, born in 1736, died September 2, 1762; married, October 13, 1753, Edward Mott. (IV) Richard, son of Edward and Mary (Cornell) Sands, was born at Sands Point, Cow Neck, Long Island, February 3,. 1729, died October 26, 1798. He married Deborah Griffin, born august 10, 1730, died March 16, 1790. Children: 1. Henry. 2. Ray. 3. Deborah. 4. Richard, of whom further. 5. Griffin. 6. William, born September 1, 1766. 7. Edward. 8. Mary. 9. Benjamin. Richard (2), son of Richard (1) and Deborah (Griffin) Sands, lived at Sands Point. He married Catharine Sands, his third cousin. Children; 1. Ann, born in 1788. 2.
