He married (fit) Mary Ann, daughter of a Mr. Dalson, who lived in the same district; and (second) a Miss Babcock. Child by first marriage: Joshua, mentioned below. Elizabeth, by second marriage. (II) Joshua, son of Josiah and Mary Ann (Dalson) Valentine, was born at Greenwood, died at Warwick, New York. he combined the occupations of farmer and stonemason, and was successful in both capacities. He did not take much interest in politics, most of his time being taken up by his work on the farm and in building in the surrounding district. He was, however, of a religious turn of mind and a steady attendant at the services in the local church. He married Mary, born in Ireland, daughter of -------------- Fitzgerald. Children: 1. Mary E., married Thomas Lincoln, of Brooklyn now deceased; she is now living in Philadelphia. 2. James, married Mary Hanlon, of New York City, and lived at Monroe, where their eight children were born: i. George, ii. Joshua, iii. James, iv. Frank, v. Arthur, vi. Grace, vii. Sadie, viii. Mary. 3. There are branches of the Conklings or Conklins in Massachusetts as well as at Southold, Easthampton, Shelter Island, and in Orange County. John Conkling and Ananias Conkling were in Salem in 1638; in the records they wee deemed proprietors at that time and they may have been there in 1737 or earlier. They are generally supposed to have come from Nottingham, England. There is a conflict in the reports as to the relation existing between John and Ananias Conkling. In Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England, Ananias is said to be probably the son of John; else where they are said to have been brothers and this assumption would on general grounds appear the more probable of the two. It is also said that they were the sons of another Ananias and were born and bred in Nottingham, England, though on what grounds it is difficult to ascertain. There is moreover considerable speculation as to the derivation or origin of the name Conkling. Though it is assumed, like many others on as slender grounds, to be English or Anglo-Saxon, the name is extremely rare in England, if it is now known there at all. Some allege that the name is
Page 515 Dutch, some say it is Irish or Gaelic, and some lain that it is Welsh. The family name was spelled ina dozen different ways, prior to one hundred years ago. It was often used as Conkling, and frequently occurred as Conklin, Conkelin, and similarly with the "g" as a termination. In rare instances K was used instead of C. The off spellings have disappeared, however, during the past century and seldom is the name now found written in any other way than as Conklin or Conkling. The experience of this family in the matter of orthography in regard to its nomenclature has found a counterpart in that of many other families. At the time when there was little printing, when there were no newspapers, few books and almost no stationery, names, and in fact words in general, were apt to be written just as they appeared to sound. Ananias Conkling is reported to have been a "glass man" at Salem in 1638. That year on the twenty-fifth of the fourth month it was recorded in the book of land grants at Salem that "It is ordered that Ananias Conclane and Willm Osborne shall have an acre a piece for house lotts." On the "25th day of the twelvemonth" of the same year appears in the book the following record: "Granted to Edmond Marshall three acres nere the 10 acre lot of Ananias Conclane." Other references are: "At a genll meeting granted to Ananias Concklyn one acre nere unto his dwelling house." "Granted unto John Conclyne, Ananias Conclyne and Thomas Scudder to each of them 4 acres to be laid out in the meadow aforesaid." (I) Charles Conklin was born at Greenwood, New York, about 1812, and died there. He was a farmer, though he was also engaged in business in one or two side lines. Valentine is a thrifty and enterprising business woman and conducts a very successful laundry business in Walden, New York. (The Sears Line.) Lower says that the name of Sears might be a form of Sares or Sayers, the plural of Sayer--meaning an essayer of metals. Dixon says that the name--which has been written Sare, Sayer, and Sayers--first occurred in England in the reign of Edmund Ironside, and a few centuries after, the family was found possessed of landed estates in the county of Essex, .some of which remained in the name as late as the year 1770. The name of Richard who landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1630, was originally Scearstan, and by lapse of time was contracted into the various forms of Sarre, Syer, Sayer, and Sears.
