PREFACE
THIS work has been prepared
at the urgent solicitation of friends, and is designed
to exhibit the rise and progress of Minnesota; what
it was and what it has become; the rapid
development of its resources; when, how and by whom
the foundations of an unparalleled prosperity were
laid; and to rescue from oblivion facts which might
be unchronicled by the future historian.
In this volume the aim
has been to present the reader with a truthful picture,
so far as words can be signs of ideas, of the beauties
and rare advantageous of this Floral Territory. And
the most important object of its publication will
be secured if men and women of sterling worth, are,
by it, induced to identify themselves with the interests
of this youthful empire, and labor to make it the
first state in our glorious Union.
