| Slathiel Pettit | |
| Slathiel Pettit was born March 31, 1829,
died July 24, 1882, at the age of 53 years. Slathiel Pettit married
Rebecca Ellen Orwig Watkins in Pennsylvania, April 8, 1859. They removed
to Wadena, Fayette county, Iowa soon after their marriage, by way of
covered wagon, accompanied by Samuel Watkins and David Watkins, Jr..
Seven children were born to Slathiel and Rebecca Pettit, namely: Mary Etta, Addie Bell, William Issac, Ida, Miles Jacob, John Edward, and Maggie. Rebecca's first husband was David Watkins, whom she married, July 15, 1849, in Pennsylvania. David Watkins, Sr. was born February 19th, 1830 and died May 4, 1858 from pnuemonia, he is buried in Pennsylvania. There were four children from this marriage: James, Samuel, Rundalph and George. Isaac Pettit, brother to Slathiel, also removed to Iowa, he married Hannah Orwig, sister to Rebecca.

| John Edward Pettit, son of Slathiel and
Rebecca (Orwig, Watkins) Pettit, was born September 19, 1873 near Wadena,
Fayette county Iowa. He passed away on September 23, 1955, at Iowa City,
Linn county Iowa and is buried at Grandview Cemetery, Fayette, Fayette
county Iowa. John E. Pettit married Mertie Wing, daughter of John Mardecaia (Jack) and Hannah Elizabeth (Van Hooser) Wing, on August 3, 1891. They were married at Lima, Fayette county, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: William Miles, born January 27, 1893; Eva Ellen, born January 10, 1896 and Nellie May, born Mrch 27, 1898. All were born in Fayette county, Iowa. John and Mertie were divorced in 1898 at West Union, Fayette county, Iowa, and the children were split up. John kept Willie Miles with him; Eva was adopted by John's brother and his wife, William and Minnie Pettit; Nellie, who was a baby at the time remained with her mother. At Mertie's death in the early summer of 1900, Nellie was adopted by Miles Pettit, another brother of John's. When Nellie was eight years of age, John (her biological father) took Nellie from Miles and Sadie Pettit, removing to Misconsire Patch Prairie for a short time, but returned to Fayette county. John was married a second time, his wife's name was Sarah, last name unknown to us. This marriage lasted a short time, and John was again divorced. Although the 1910 census shows a Sarah E. Pettit, born August 22, 1877, mother and father natives of Pennsylvania and New York, respectively. John married a third time to Nina Hass, remaining married until her death in February, 1920. Three children were born to this union: Theresia, died in infancy; Carl Slathiel, born July 5, 1908 and Jennie May, born September 11, 1911. John was married a fourth time shortly before his death in 1955 to Verna Lamtz.

| Willie Miles Pettit | |
| Willie Miles Pettit, son of John Edward and
Rebecca Pettit was born January 27, 1893 near Wadena, Fayette county, Iowa
and died August 17, 1971 at Cedar Rapids, Linn county, Iowa, at the age of
78 years. Willie married Emma Susan Ann Carlton, daughter of Charlie Henry Carlton and Edna Elmida Whitcomb on May 4, 1915. Susan, as she was known, was born January 12, 1900, and is still living at this time in Oelwein, Fayette county, Iowa. Nine children were born to this union: Edward Robert, born October 12, 1917, died March 17, 1968; Leona; Frank Parker, born December 29, 1921, died May, 2001; LaVon, William Charles; John B., and David James, born July 10, 1930, died January 10, 1976 from a gunshot wound; Betty Louann, born and died August 10, 1944, and one infant died at birth in 1916, unnamed. |
