ASSIGNMENT OF WAGES
The following lists show the custom of the times. The towns assumed the
payment of the wages of their own soldiers, to their families left at
home, the families thus receiving sure and immediate aid, and the towns
being credited to that amount upon their colonial "rates," or
taxes. It was doubtless a means of great help to the families, and of
saving to the towns, as it secured at once the support of the families
without public charge, and at the same time the prompt payment of taxes.
The value of these lists to the historical and genealogical student
will appear in the evidence they afford as to each man's residence at that
time. The proof might not be positive in every case, yet in general it may
be concluded that where a man assigns his wages to a town, it is because
he considers that his place of residence.
