THE AMERICANS GO INTO THE TRENCHES
 On the night of October 20, 1917, the men of the First Division having completed their training, relieved the French in the trenches southwest of Nancy. On the 27th of Ocotber, they captured the first German prisoner to be captured by American forces, and on November 3, the division suffered its first casualties from actual combat, three men of the 16th Infantry being killed by a German raiding party. This sector was no longer "quiet".
