THESE WERE MEN ONCE
This photograph shows German dead left unburied by their hastily retreating comrades. To crawl into a mess like this, in the tense darkness, with shells whistling and falling all around, was a terrific strain on a man.
 
THEY STUCK TO THEIR GUNS
Individualism had been crushed so thoroughly that they had the bravery and determination of wild animals. Six German machine gunners, who were wearing Red Cross brassards in this machine gun nest, refused to surrender.
