On April 1, 1880, the boiler at Hussong's Stave Factory in Crawford County, Illinois, exploded, resulting in the death of five men*.

On March 15, 1889*, the boiler of the Springer & Lackey Mill (also in Crawford County) exploded.

The photograph at left shows another Crawford County boiler explosion - that of the light plant on April 14, 1910.

An interesting lithograph depicting a boiler explosion on a steam boat.
This is a safety (or pop-off) valve, used to release pressure in a boiler that would otherwise cause a boiler to explode.
