AUSTIN - Levis Jarrard, 94, matriarch of the Jarrard family, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 1997, at the Austin Nursing Center in Austin. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Wilke-Amey-Clay Funeral Home in Austin. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mart, Texas Cemetery. Levis Everett Jayrard was bom Dec. 24, 1902, in De Leon, Texas, the eldest daughter of John and Bertha (Ballard) Lasswell. She received a high school education in Chillicothe, Texas, graduating as valedictorian in 1919. Levis married Thomas Ivan Jarrard on Jan. 21, 1922, in Chillicothe and moved shortly there after to Pueblo, Colo., where Ivan was the state's first motorcycle mounted police officer. They settled in Waco where the family operated a bait and tackle business     for many years. In 1983, Levis moved to Austin to be with her sister, Norene Finkelstine.  Levis was active in the community, serving as president of the Waco PTA when her children were being educated. She was a longtime member of the First  Baptist Church in Waco and more recently, the Congress Avenue Baptist Church in Austin. She served as Sunday school teacher for many years. Levis was a talented seamstress and crocheter. She was so proud when her crocheted ornaments were selected in 1993 for display on the nation's Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. Friends and family treasure the beautiful crocheted bells, snowflakes and angels she created. Granny, as she was affectionately known by her family, was a master fisherman and into her 90s enjoyed fishing for crappie, catfish and bass. She passed a love of fishing (or at least an appreciation of the sport) on to her grandchildren. We learned so much from her and she Levis was preceded in death by  her husband of 48 years in 1970; her sisters, Dorothy Lasswell in 1932 and Fannie Simmons in 1960; and her brother, James Lasswell in 1982. Left to mourn are her sons, Thomas Ivan Jarrard Jr. and wife Karon of San Diego, Calif., Dr. Leonard Everett Jarrard and wife Janet of Lexington, Va., and John David Jarrard and wife Anne of Little Rock, Ark; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Exa Norene Finkelstine of Austin; sister- in-law Clara Mae Lasswell of Brownwood, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to a charity of choice.
